Binotto also said that if engines are frozen for 2022, there should be "a mechanism of engine convergence," meaning that under-performing engines can be brought closer to the leaders' pace.

Ferrari agrees there should be an engine freeze for everyone else.

More of an engine freeze for Mercedes and Mercedes only.

I alway, ALWAYS, try to temper expectations after watching practice sessions, you know, it's just practice.

HOLY shite GEORGE RUSSELL IS P1 IN FP1!!! HE TOPPED BOTTAS. IT'S HAPPENING ISN'T IT!?!? POLE, POINTS, PODIUM, A WIN, ALL OF IT!

But but but it’s all Lewis’s greatest, it’s not the car.

I mean Lewis is still the best driver on the grid by a country mile so I'm sure anyone could drive it to victory if they have any sort of talent. Check back in on Sunday.

I wish this meant Lewis lost a lot of negotiating power, but it doesn’t.

If he pulls P1 in quali....pay whatever it takes to get Bottas out of his contract and put GR in that second car.

GR is showing his ability and it’s damn good.

It's a testament to Russell's skill level that he goes out and races a car that he isn't the most familiar with and beats his team mate that has been running that car for years.

Seems like when drivers switch teams, it takes a little bit for them to get used to the feel of the car (Riccardo to Renault comes to mind, as does Gasly from Toro to RB). I get that the Merc is the best car on the grid, but it's still impressive out of Russell.

Verstappen in a Merc would be phenomenal. Fighting Bottas for 2nd with a vastly inferior power plant

I was just coming to the MSB to see if there is an F1 thread. 2019 was my first year watching F1 and I really enjoy it. I'm glad to see Russell did well in the first practice. So 1 of 3 things are true or all of them are true:

1. Lewis is not that good
2. Williams car is worst than HAAS' car
3. Russell is a great driver and very underrated

I'll agree on points 2 and 3, not on point one. Lewis is a very very good driver in a very very good car. Could a slightly less talented driver have similar success in his exact situation? Yes. But saying Lewis isnt that good is a bad take.

Make no mistake about it, Lewis is probably the best driver on the grid, yes, he's in the best car but we've seen time and time again of him just excelling over his teammate when the pressure is on. I can't stand him, but he's the best out there right now. I do think if you remove Lewis from the grid and put any of Bottas, Leclerc, Max, Russell, or Ricciardo in that same car and either of them would be instant contenders for a WDC.

Williams is undoubtedly slower than Haas, yes George has dragged that car into Q2 a few times but George is a guy with great potential driving a car way past its potential. Similar to Leclerc running the Ferrari probably higher than it should be alot of times.

I don't think George is underrated, he's been viewed as probably one of the next greats and is the heir-apparent to the next open Mercedes seat, which will likely be 2022. Earlier this season Williams wouldn't release George from his contract a year early(under contract for 2021) and Merc signed Bottas to a 1 year deal for next season. At this point it's assumed Russell will take over Bottas seat once both their contracts were up, and a really good showing this weekend will probably cement that move next year.

Russell take FP1 and 2...

Would love for him to sweep down the board.

Hamilton’s a great driver, but this would show to what degree the car makes the difference. Put Max in the Merc and holy shite.

So, we are all rooting for Russell to outqualify Bottas tomorrow and then win on Sunday, right?
