I don't get why you're tying NIL to this discussion?

Yes, I would take the BCS formula from 2003 back in a heartbeat to go along with some form of NIL. I have, and always will be, in the "players should get money for their likeness" camp.

I said this for years, the BCS should have been used to generate a 4 team playoff. For all it's flaws, the BCS usually had the top 4 right and should have been used for that.

Transfer rules need to go back to the BCS era way, I like the playoffs compared to the bowl games but the college football season needs to be over by the first week of January.

BCS and NIL are unrelated.

The pre-BCS era with a plus-one title game added on after the bowls is all the sport ever needed.

I don't want to go back to the BCS but the new playoff should have stopped at 8 or so.

I don't care about players getting paid, they're the ones actually putting their arses on the line in this stuff and there's jillions of dollars to go around, and I truly don't understand why the very idea makes fans levitate.

The portal has to be changed or it will destroy the sport, annual free agency is not sustainable in any sport at any level.

Screw the B(C)S. And NIL is a terminal cancer to "college" athlrtics.

And coaches.

Yeah it wasn't perfect but it wasn't wrong often.
Also playoffs didn't stop UCF from co-claiming a championship based on journalists polls so not everything changed.

I think what was lost outweighed what was gained.

I think there are certainly people that wanted a playoff system that did not simultaneously argue for NIL.

Dumb gotcha

NCAA, or College Football Czar, or some Super Conference alliance can make all the rules they want. Big money is on the menu, and always has been… but lawyers have gotten a taste, and there is probably no reining it in sustainably without an antitrust exemption.

Yeah. Who is to say even if we kept the old bcs system those same judges wouldnt have made the same ruling that schools/ncaa cant restrict transfers?

I know it's fun to rag on the NCAA but I don't completely fault them for this shite we're in. Anytime they tried to enforce a rule that they had in place someone would sue them and some pantywaist judge would rule against them. Their legs were cut out from under them from being able to enforce anything. It's kinda hard to enforce the rules about paying players when you're just going to get told by a judge you're not allowed to do so.

Yeah i think there are a lot of casuals that blame the ncaa for these changes that were brought about by lawfare and judges.

Having a playoff is what was needed. Though I wish it were just 8 teams instead of twelve.

And the bs committee determining rankings and who's in and who's out well...

The issue with NIL is that it's just turned into pay for play which isn't what NIL should be. It was always sold as getting portion of jersey sales and doing commercials etc.... that isn't what it is.

Then the portal rules obviously don't help with that.

definitely, although anyone with a brain could see that's how it would go. That we went from:

-hey the star QB can now get a percentage of his jersey sales from the bookstore. Nice!

to

-We are going to offer this 17 year old high schooler $1M to sign with us in addition to providing his immediate family with a house and cars. After his FR years we will have to negotiate with his handler/agent to see if he wants to remain for another $1M+ or if he'll bolt with no repercussions to our biggest rival

in the span of like 2 years is just insane though. It was breakneck quick.

Its not the playoffs or NIL that are the issue. Its the open transfers. A player couldn't hold out if he had no where to go. I do think that players shgould be allowed 1 penalty free transfer but to be able to transfer every year? Thats a huge issue.

I NEVER argued for NIL (I have always been opposed to college players being paid). I still believe a playoff is the superior system, but the playoffs we’ve gotten haven’t really been quite perfect yet.
