The NFL is really a steaming pile of shite compared to the product from the 80s and 90s. On top of the blatant game fixing due to gambling, the sport is being completely emasculated.

CFB is still better in terms of excitement generated, but NIL and the portal makes it hard to consistently root for a player.

I can guarantee you that Tua cannot make the deep out throw from the opposite hash so dude's assessment is wrong.

The training, film, technology QBs at a young age have access to now are light years ahead of QBs from even 20 years ago. The difference is the game is faster at every single level. It’s no different than a pitcher in todays baseball who is basically built in the pitch lab.

I don’t agree with this take.

Offense is down and now the sport is in decline?
Could it not be that defenses are playing better?

These athletes are faster, stronger and have been training for longer periods than any other era of the sport.

I've been saying this for the past couple of years. Teams have placed TOO muich emphasis on "measureables" instead of guys who are just good football players and the game is suffering for it. Some of what you are seeing IS the defenses adjusting, more cover 2, but the passing decline is real. WR's are drafted/signed based mostly on their 40 times. Many are NOT good route runners, have poor hands/ball skills, and if the ball is not coming to them they don't play with full effort running decoy routes, run blocking, etc.

Yeah the ones that are good at all these things end up working at UPS. Why would the NFL want them.

As fun as the Sosa-maguire HR derby season was, it was due to an influx of subpar pitching that was foreseeable.

It was due to more than the pitching…

1994 the season stopped and Matt Williams already had 43 HR

1995 a shortened season Albert Belle had 50

1996 was the original slugfest of a season when Brady Anderson (!!!) had 50, among others

1997 Griffey had 56 and McGwire had 58 between two different teams

Then you add in new pitchers due to 1998 expansion… they weren’t natural to begin with

Steve DeBerg and Wade Wilson would slice up 2024 NFL defenses like a couple of hibachi chefs.

Hard to be successful being a statue in the pocket. Mobility needed in today’s NFL with these edge rushers.

Break down of an average NFL game (% of total) according to the Wall Street Journal: 1) Players standing around – 1h 7m (35%) 2) Advertising – 1h 3m (33%) 3) Other – 0h 34m (18%) 4) Replays – 0h 17m (9%) 5) Actual playing time – 0h 11m (6%)

Soccer is the opposite, and is awesome.

Yeah. 94% of the broadcast lasting 3 hours watching guys chase a ball around and kick it, and a 3-2 game is an offensive shootout!

No thanks.

Right, I agree. Thats why most QBs these days are handcuffed to the point where their coaches are too scared to let them throw a pass that’s more than 5 yards past the line of scrimmage

The NFL product has been going downhill significantly the last 10 + years. The refs and their on the fly decision making has really got out of hand and with their ability to review plays at their discretion now and overturn is sort of ridiculous. Can’t even celebrate a td in real time like the old days because you have to check for a flag. With that being said, enjoying the watching Skins football for the first time in 10 plus years. Jayden is on his way to becoming the face of the league after Mahomes. I still prefer the college product even if the talent isn’t halfway there. But they’re well on their way to ruining that too with the NIL.

I catch myself turning off games to watch a non-sports related movie or show so that I can get a break from the breaks.

I don't think I've intentionally set out to watch an NFL game since around 2011.

I'll put it on in the background every now and then, especially in December/January and it's a crappy day out, but it's just not that interesting for the most part anymore.

Or...21-14.

Which is a shootout in most NFL games this year

Football is not much fun to watch these days. How do they fix it?

Really what killed Football for me is all the damn commercials. 60 minute game that takes 3&1/2 to 4 hours to broadcast. Who can sit through that?

I've made the switch over to Rugby. An 80 minute game that takes 2 hours to broadcast. I can watch two Rugby matches in the time it takes to watch one Football game.

IMO, offensive lines haven't next kept up with the athleticism of d-lines/linebackers, which leads to shitty QB play because they don't have time to throw the ball. Obviously this isn't the case in every scenario (see Bryce Young), but it's true a lot of the time.

Geno Smith is actually one of the better NFL QBs. The league is that watered down. I'm seeing lot of game stat lines from shitty teams that cant even break 150 passing yards.

I’m pretty frustrated with the nfl in general these days, but I don’t understand the ‘it takes way too long to finish a game’ complaint. The saints falcons game last week started at 12:08 or whatever it was and ended a little after 3:00. Seems like it’s been that way for as long as I can remember

Maybe the primetime games are different

This is part of it, however, I would also argue that there are fewer QBs in the league that can stretch defenses the way they were being stretched in the 00s and 10s.

QB play just isn't what it used to be.
