Every argument against playoff expansion has been proven correct this year

- The biggest beneficiaries of this system will be the premier programs getting multiple mulligans every year. Ohio State, Penn State, and Texas all fit this. Alabama nearly got in with 3 losses.
- While it’s cool to see non traditional programs in the playoff, they won’t win anyways. SMU, Indiana, Arizona State, and Boise State all lost. Only Arizona State was competitive, and they realistically could have made it in the 4 system like TCU did.
- The bye will not be a benefit due to seeding and long layoffs between games. Teams with the bye are 0-3.
- Playoff expansion with 3 rounds at neutral sites will make top 10 regular season games irrelevant and move the biggest games off campus. Regular season Ohio State-Oregon, Ohio State-Penn State, and Texas-UGA have all been rendered irrelevant. Oregon went 13-0, and their reward was this embarrassment.
- If the games weren’t usually competitive with 4 teams, why will they be competitive with 12? Currently 1 of 7 games have been competitive.
- Putting 12 teams in will encourage soft scheduling. Texas, Tennessee, Indiana, SMU, Notre Dame all got in because of bad schedules.
TLDR: This system blows.

That and one power program in a weak conference, ie Clemson

Need to break up the mega conferences. Also need a transparent decision tree instead of a committee. Every bad decision in every system was the direct result of assclown pollsters.

A Bama fan melting over the the playoff system is the height of irony.

For me the seeding sucks. SOS should determine seeding

The seeding seemed off and 12 teams is really excessive

You’re going to really hate it when it goes to 16.
This isn’t about what is best for the sport. It’s about money. Period.

Did Oregon deserve to be there, because they got trucked in their game with the Bucknuts?

I feel like 8, no byes, no AQs, ranked and seeded 1-8 would've been preferable. And honestly, if your conference champion can't crack the top 8, they probably shouldn't be in a playoff. So this year would've been:
Oregon-Indiana
Penn State-Notre Dame
Texas-Ohio State
Georgia-Tennessee
I could see those being a bit more competitive, but who the frick knows.

Why don’t people do this during the basketball tournament? Yea every now and then there are upsets but generally the first few rounds are blow outs.

That's true but the talent discrepancy in football is so much bigger. In basketball an underdog can get hot and make a run (like 11 seed NC State in the Final Four last year). Feels next to impossible in football.

Needs to be 8 teams.. use a transparent ranking system with bonus for conference championships based on a conference ranking but no guaranteed spot
Posted on 1/1/25 at 8:35 pm to Bestbank Tiger
You only need a 6 team playoff imo

For me the seeding sucks.

I disagree wholeheartedly at least in part.
It is easy to argue that 9-12 shouldn't have been included but as of this minute all 3 teams that are qualified for the semis would have been on the outside looking in last year. That alone significantly supports the idea of at least an 8 team playoff.

Exactly. If somebody or something was gonna step in and put a stop to this for the good of the sport, it would’ve happened already. The almighty dollar is all that matters in these decisions. It is what it is. I don’t like it but I still watch and follow the sport.

I think it just proves my point that this system benefits elite programs that piddled around during the regular season.

My biggest complaint with the system is that teams like mine had a chance to get in at all. Ohio State, Texas, and Penn State all had disappointing regular seasons, but it doesn’t matter in this system. There’s not even home field advantage to reward a team like Oregon going 13-0.

College basketball isn’t popular until the tournament, so the tournament doesn’t diminish something people care about. They could put every single D1 team in the tournament if they wanted.

It's the first year. (After major conference shakeups no less).
They'll tweak it accordingly.
You guys are such crybabies
