I think the B1G is right about auto bids but not the number. You can keep 12 and just give 4 autos to the SEC and Big Ten and then play 10+ conference games.
Most years you wont be able to tell which conference is better so the SEC only getting 3 last year and the B1G only getting 3 this year is dumb when we know these are by far the best teams in the country.
There are only 3-4 teams outside these conferences that could compete.

The playoff is better but conference expansion ruined it IMO. The best thing that could happen is the conferences split up under a non NCAA organization. Make conference membership required to get into the playoff.
