A 22 win Big 10 team isn't a Cinderella there hoss

Iowa was 22-12, but I’d argue they were under-seeded. They lost a lot of games to elite competition in what appears to be the best league and probably should have been a 6 or 7 seed.

@ 2 seed Iowa state - 4 points, led 44% of the game

@ 4 seed Nebraska - OT loss

@ 3 seed Michigan State - got smoked

3 seed Illinois - 6 points

1 seed Michigan - 3 points, led 30% of way

2 seed Purdue x2 - got smoked at home, lost by 7 on road after leading 56% of way

@ 5 seed Wisconsin - pulled away late after Iowa led 40% of the game.

All but one of those teams are playing next weekend

If you look at Iowas roster, they’re the closest thing. They brought in six guys from Drake, four of which were with Iowa’s Coach at Division 2 NW Missouri State in 2023-24 — and the dude who hit the game winner was out of Robert Morris. Granted he was the Horizon league POY last year.

Wouldn’t call that the closest thing…I would call that the proof of what everyone is arguing. A Big 10 school is made up of players that would be playing at mid and low major schools if this was 5-10 years ago.

Kids who can play are being found via social media and travel ball and no longer falling back on low level offers. TV airing every game allows major teams to scout small teams

AAU basketball has been around far, far longer than travel baseball.

The OP is right, NIL and portal rules have killed the Cinderella.

The 2010, 2011 Butler teams that went lost back to back in the Championship game would've got broken up if they played in the NIL era.

Gordon Hayward, Shelvin Mack would've got offered millions to play at a Power 4 school

Didn’t read the whole thread but I think it’s just as much advanced metrics.

Those Cinderellas are higher seeds.

Maybe I’m wrong but looks at McNeese last year. They were a 12 seed.

I don’t see that being the case 10 years ago.

If your athletic program is able to be funded to the tune of $100 Million plus, I’m not sure you can be a “Cinderella”. You’re just finally doing something worthwhile with all that cash.

Two years is not much of a sample size.

Or, the team they beat- Gonzaga. They have an undergrad enrollment of under 6k, so smaller than some Texas high schools. You could call them cinderella for that

Duke has about 6k undergrads... Cinderella?

It must be awful trying to be a fan of a smaller school these days. Any time you get a good player they’re gone as soon as the season ends to the portal

It's the transfer portal.

The only reason the drake guys are there is they followed a coach who inherited a player rebellion where the entire roster left. None of the Drake guys likely leave without the coach leaving and they all would have come to Iowa without NIL. Iowa has the lowest NIL budget in the sweet 16. Most of them wouldn’t have been wanted by anyone playing this weekend except Stirtz.

Teams rosters barely changed year to year...no one and dones. Now the portal, now NIL...its so far removed from College athletes, so far removed from "your team"... who are these guys sporting my teams colors? The turnstile, the $ , the Dance is over.

The good ole days, back when muh college ball was so much better because 16 and 17 year olds had to decide in HS who they would rep as an indentured servant, making millions for rich people and wealthy institutions without wages, while not being able to work for free anywhere else without severe penalty.

Because other figs still talk about the good ole days, when the field hands were chained to schools and worked for free.

Tulane's best run in football history is this past four years in the NIL era.

Tulane have been buying up bottom G5 stars and developing them to borderline top 25.

In turn, we get raided by Florida, etc. it’s the circle of life.

They could always turn down the free tuition, housing, meals and opportunity to graduate with a 4 year degree free of any college debt or their parents having to pay. No one forces them to sign on for an athletic scholarship.

But hey, at the end of the day, I’m perfectly good with and support college athletes being able to get paid to do car commercials, make charity appearances and make money of giving private lessons in their sport without having to worry about running afoul of the NCAA; however, if you’re going to transfer, you should sit.

You can still make money doing commercials during your sit year, or whatever your sugar daddy booster is willing to do. But you sit…and hopefully use the time you’re not having to worry about traveling for games to pass some classes towards your free college degree.

Why should they have to sit and forgo eligibility? You act like a college developed their talent all alone. In hoops, these kids are highly skilled students of the game playing all over the nation by early HS. Do you not see how sitting on a bench in street clothes might limit one’s NIL value? How many advertisers are paying the shooting guard who can’t play v. The guy who plays 30mpg? Say a valuable player is behind a better player and gets limited time, he should be forced to lose eligibility because he made the wrong decision at 16? It’s dumb.

The ncaa was a criminal cartel model that sought to use free labor to make millions of dollars off the production of young adults. Further, the government mandates this cartel redistributes the wealth generated by few to a bunch of people competing in worthless sports that lose millions. It is the essence of Communism.

I’m sure most of these kids would be more than happy paying their tuition out of their earnings now that they get paid. Most of these degrees aren’t worth shite. College isn’t what it used to be, market is wholly saturated and overpriced.
