You are getting crapped on in this thread, but that's actually an excellent idea. It's certainly better than letting a puppet committee run by ESPN decide who's in. Of course, it will never happen because money, not merit, is the deciding factor.

Why even play the season? Just let Vegas come out with their odds after fall camp and whoever is the favorite hand them the trophy.

Clemson, ASU, and Boise 100% “deserve” to be in. They met the stated criteria for admission to the playoff. Beyond conference winners, “deserve” becomes subjective.

I’m not following. Those three teams met the stated criteria for being selected to the playoff, along with Georgia and Oregon.
Big12, B10, ACC, and SEC conference champs get in. Highest rated G4 conference champ gets in.
You can debate whether conference champs should get an auto bid if you want, but that’s a stated, objective, criteria so by that merit they deserve it.
Everyone after that is subjective. And guess what, “Vegas” odds are also subjective.
The playoff will determine a champion. Champions aren’t always the “best.”
