They could easily just say they believed Te'o. Just like all of the media is doing. They weren't complicit. Nobody would really care. People might have a few jokes at ND's expense for a few days, but no damage whatsoever. By having Swarbrick come out the way he did yesterday, if Te'o's story didn't check out and Swarbrick still said it did, only bad things can come of it for ND.
We are talking about a university who may or may not have covered up the rape of a woman by a football player and may or may not have covered up just how complicit the University of Notre Dame was in the death of a manager at football practice. Notre Dame has a habit of covering the asses of their "family members."

After all those lectures on NCAA compliance, you think he would have learned that people you meet on the internet aren't always the most trustworthy of sorts.
This doesn't mean he necessarily listened or took this advice.

donations would go to the society in memory of Lennay Kekua, who reportedly died last fall, and in honor of Te'o, "two individuals who have been an inspiration to us through an iconic season."

Those two incidents were both investigated by outside, independent parties, and nothing came of either. It's stupid to use them.

So he knew here 4 years and dated her for a year and has repeatedly said he met her but now says he never met her.
SI: How long were you dating? I know that can be a complicated question.
TE'O: Oct. 15 was the official date. Of last year. I've known her for four years. So we've been friends.
SI: So you dated for about a year.
TE'O: Yeah.
SI: Just want to make sure I have her name right.
TE'O: Lennay Kekua.

SI: What did she do?
TE'O: She actually just graduated from Stanford. She worked at Clark's Construction Company, I think. She replaced her dad after her dad passed.

TE'O: Koa.
SI: What did he have to tell you?
TE'O: I kind of felt it. He was just crying and crying and crying. I just had to calm him down. I was like, "You have to speak clearly, I need to know what's going on." That's when he told me, Lala is gone. That's what they call her. They call her Lala.

What prankster would do this?
SI: You would literally sleep with your phone on with her on it?
TE'O: With her on it.
SI: When you woke up?
TE'O: She's be on it.
SI: What would the phone say?
TE'O: Like eight hours. Lucky she had AT&T so it was all free or my family would kill me.
SI: When did you start talking to her all night?
TE'O: When she got in her accident?

The 8 hr phone calls were apparently maded, but to whom is the question. N.D.'s PI report had his phone records & those calls were made. A good catfish involves multiple people, and the perp no doubt had a girl lined up to take those calls, as well as another male..if not himself...to act as her brother who called Manti to tell him of her death. There was also supposedly a phone conversation with the brother telling him of her wishes for him to not come to the hospital when she was dying or to her funeral. It can be looked at as funny,a great troll..... till you factor in the dying of cancer aspect. That is about as low as it gets when lying to someone.

I think this is just all a part of the narrative he was creating after he was up a creek without a paddle. Its all lies. The same with the lengthy phone calls you posted further downthread.
I strongly believe he wasn't initially involved in this thing. He got catfished by this dude in Cali and eventually found out. Whether or not he found out she was fake before or after the death is the question. If he found out after he may have been embarrassed after the media attention he received and also saw how it was helping him so he kept it up.
I seriously doubt he initially created this whole thing. He got duped, found out, and then spun the story to benefit himself.

Now she's in a coma and on his way from ND back home and he doesn't stop and see her when he changes flights?
TE'O: She didn't get out. She went from there. Remember she got in the accident and she was in a coma. We lost her, actually, twice. She flatlined twice. They revived her twice. It was just a trippy situation. It was a day I was flying home from South Bend to go home for summer break. It was May. Mid-May. That was the day where they said, "Bro, we're going to pull it. We're going to pull the plug." I remember having this feeling like everything is going to be OK. They were telling me, "Say your goodbyes." From April 28 to around mid-May, I was always talking to my girlfriend who was on a machine.

I wonder what happened on October 15th to make it official. Did he say 'Lennay will you go with me?'

I'm also convinced that ND wasn't informed of this by Te'o on the 26th or whatever date they claimed. I don't think Te'o came to them at all.
Think of this. If they had been informed, and they did indeed hire an independent investigator, the investigator could have easily found out exactly who was doing this, where they were, etc. A lot of people on this board have the capability to uncover something like that. It simply doesn't make sense.
I think ND was probably tipped off a few days ago at least and came up with their explanation over the last few days. I don't think Te'o came to them first though.

Right
Pretty much everything he says or has said means nothing now

For some reason I hear this in Will Ferrell's voice. And it cracks me up.
