I'm also convinced that ND wasn't informed of this by Te'o on the 26th or whatever date they claimed. I don't think Te'o came to them at all.
Like I said all along. They found out about this yesterday the same time as the rest of us. Maybe they got a heads up via deadspin asking them for comments, but they found out yesterday.

SI: What was her major?
TE'O: Her major was in English and something. I'll double check.
SI: I can call Stanford and check. They have to have some record or note that she passed.
Wonder if he ever tried to check on this?

Which, if true, means the ND administration lied. So why should we believe anything else they say?

I wonder what happened on October 15th to make it official. Did he say 'Lennay will you go with me?'
They started talking on twitter on the 10th so I guess soon after

SI: Does the family own a construction business?
TE'O: No. But they're part of the whole administration, the higher-ups. Their family worked really hard and worked their way up. She's very smart, very smart and very intellectual. She worked there but her main dream was to work with kids. She traveled all around. She taught at elementary schools. She flew to New Zealand to just work with kids. That's what she loved to do, work with children.
SI: What did she study?
TE'O: She graduated in 2011 or 2010. 2011.
SI: What was her major?
TE'O: Her major was in English and something. I'll double check.

Dear. God.
Come on, Kosmo, it's normal to not know what your girlfriend is majoring in, right???

Plaschke is saying ESPN had some responsibility to look up the dude's GF.
He's probably gonna get fired.

I think this is just all a part of the narrative he was creating after he was up a creek without a paddle. Its all lies. The same with the lengthy phone calls you posted further downthread.
I strongly believe he wasn't initially involved in this thing. He got catfished by this dude in Cali and eventually found out. Whether or not he found out she was fake before or after the death is the question. If he found out after he may have been embarrassed after the media attention he received and also saw how it was helping him so he kept it up.
I seriously doubt he initially created this whole thing. He got duped, found out, and then spun the story to benefit himself.
I agree - he was probably embarrassed as frick and was caught up in his web of lies and couldn't escape.

SI: Why did you go to practice after you found out the news?
TE'O: I knew for me that my girlfriend and my family would want me to be out there. They wouldn't want me to be sulking over things. I knew for me, the best way to show they that I loved them was to play the best game of my life on Saturday. In order to do that, I needed to be out there practicing no matter what I was going through. I needed to just suck it up and get out there and get my work done and be ready to represent them the best way I know how on Saturday. When I got out there, it was hard. But I just brought my team up. Coach brought my team up. He had them come out and explain to them what happened. I told them I love each and every one of you. I lost my grandmother the night before and found out this morning that I just lost my girlfriend six hours later. Never in my life has family been pushed to the forefront. My goal is now, and has been, but there's more to it now. Just to make sure I see my family and loved ones again. I told them, this is my family. You guys are my family. I love each and every one of you. Stick together. And I told them, my girlfriend always told me, "Send roses while they still can smell them, tell them they love you while they still can hear it." I told them to make sure you tell your family members you love them every single day.

I don't think Teo is a victim. He clearly embellished and possibly even flat out made up details about this relationship.
But to act like he's either a stupid, naive kid who got completely duped OR a crazy who made an elaborate ruse with 80 times more risk than reward isn't fair. Considering a third, more logical option doesn't make anyone a "fricking moron." It just means we're looking for more rational reasons.
It may be that there is no rational explanation to this. But don't be a jackass, take a side, and draw a line in the sand.
(not directed at you, LSUsmartass. Just a general statement...just clicked reply to the last post).
ETA: Haven't read the SI deal yet. Let me get on that.

That whole interview sounds like a complete lie, honestly.
Read that whole thing. Damn.

Think of this. If they had been informed, and they did indeed hire an independent investigator, the investigator could have easily found out exactly who was doing this, where they were, etc. A lot of people on this board have the capability to uncover something like that.
This is consistant with what Swarbuck said yesterday

My question is did the SI guy call Stanford? Did Deadspin ever say how they got tipped?
