will this go down as the longest thread ever on the MSB? we're nearing 200 pages and we haven't even learned the whole truth yet...

the reason this story is so fascinating is that either of the explanations are unimaginable, so something unimaginable has occurred:
Either he is quite literally mentally challenged to have never asked himself some very basic questions during this "relationship"....
....or a Heisman candidate did something so bizarre in making this chick up that he belongs in inpatient psychiatric care.
It's one or the other and either one is fascinating.

I find it very odd that te'o didn't dispute deadspin at all in his statement.
He says he had an online only girlfriend. Didn't mention deadspin at all. Didn't say anything about there being false accusations against him at all, or accusations against him without all the facts. Notre Dame didnt either.
That goes with Swarbuck saying that they were coming out with his stuff soon.

But what if you have talked on the phone?
I still don't think I would describe the relationship as one where we "met."

Just face it....he created her to keep his family and teammates off his back about not having a lady friend.
Yeah, rather than just have a ND/SMC girl be in a relationship with him for a few months, he decided to completely make up a fake person?
I know Manti a little from two classes I had with him (first name basis, but not well enough to call him a friend), but talking to people on campus that knew him better/friends of mine on the team, they say he made his way around with the ladies. And it's not a secret on campus that he didn't exactly engage in sobriety 100 percent of the time, a big Mormon no-no.
Manti's a phony to the extent that his portrayal as a devout Mormon (emphasis on "devout") is just not true (I'd say he's more "spiritual" than "religious"), but he's not evil. He also puts on a quiet, humble, reserved, private front to the media, but he was always very outgoing and loud in class settings, and even when you watch him play, he does a lot of things for attention/to get the crowd involved. He still does a lot of good things and helps a lot of people, but his real personality is different than he lets on.
I do think he was duped and lied/exaggerated the relationship. He probably was disturbed and troubled this friend (should have never called her a girlfriend) died and then exaggerated details of the relationship, whether to avoid the embarrassment of saying that he never met this almost year-long "girlfriend", for sympathy, publicity, etc. But I can't see him being a complete jackass to go to the extreme to make someone up and fake her death, and I certainly can't see the university doing something so stupid as to stand behind him if they weren't sure his story mostly checked out.

Precisely. There's no way that makes sense. Which means that Te'o was lying about it and thus, in on the deception.

It's plausible don't you think?
No this isn't plausible. ND's AD had to jump in front of cameras and lie his arse off for a little damage control because the athletic department was complicit in all this as well (they helped to push the narrative about his "girlfriend"). If this had been a real hoax that had been investigated by a PI, then the details would have already been released to clear Te'o and Notre Dame. There is a story in the newspaper about how they physically met in Palo Alto and exchanged phone numbers. SOMEONE made this up, and it was either ND or Te'o.

M.Wilborn said that several of Te'o's closest teammates were quoted as saying they did not get the impression that he was THAT much in love with her, implying that he was embellishing the depth of the relationship. As well, N.D.'s PI report stated that they had copies of chats between the 2 perps & they were obviously enjoying fooling him. A family friend was quotes as saying the dad has a way of "adding color" to stories. My vote is it started off as a catfish & then he got onto it, became humilated, and tried to ride it out.

I would never describe anyone on TD that I've never met IRL as someone I "met" and I think most others would say the same thing.
I am the same way but, I know some very socially awkward people that have done just that.

Right, but I still find it unusual. Usually when these athletes are caught in a lie they are quick to blame publications and the media and other entities.

Does anyone know when he first mentioned his girlfriend to anyone that is on record? I know everyone has scrutinized what days he talked about her in relation to when he might have known it was a scam, but when was the first time he ever tweeted her/talked about a girlfriend in an interview/mentioned her to anybody?
I think the timing of this is the most important thing in deciding the truth. The dates around December 6th don't mean anything because at that point he was in CYA mode regardless if he was the victim or the perp.

Definitely needed time to get his story straight after speaking with PR folks. He is probably spending all day meeting with people to prep him for his interview.
It won't be a PC b/c he is going to want to avoid gotcha journalism. It will be a sit down with one person.

But you are internet savvy as well as (presumably) socially apt IRL. Manti is probably neither.

Who on here is still supporting the theory that Te'o was a victim? And what evidence are you pointing to as to why? What evidence can I show you to convince you otherwise?
