Saw a lot of Bregman hate this past week. Has he just not played up to par? Also saw mentions of baked good and getting married. He didn't look out of shape to me. Not trolling at all, but since he's an LSU guy, just wondering what's going on with him.

My opinion, paralysis due to analysis.

I'm just curious if this team will exist next year.

After 2019 he bulked up to add more power. It coincided with rolling back the ball and he’s still chasing power.
His success is 2018-2019 was due to him lifting the ball to the pull side which I think I saw netted him an additional 10-15 HRs over the last few years, but it seems to have killed his gap to gap doubles power he came up with.
Altuve has seen a similar issue since 2019 as well

He bulked up to add power last winter and it clearly didn’t work. Was out of shape and hurt for most of the year then missed a bunch of time. When he came back he was fine (in the regular season). Then I think was in a big mental funk in this series and Boston.
I don’t think he’s damaged goods and he clearly works his arse off and competes but needs to rethink his approach this off-season. I will bet on a guy like that figuring it out though all day.

TLDR; the formerly juiced ball really fricked with Bregs’ overall plate approach and it really came to a head the last month to 6 weeks of the season

Bregman did make some cool salsa videos. That means something.

He had a down season, AVG/OBP/SLG were all below his career numbers, and he was even worse in the playoffs.
His HR rate, K rate, and Walk rate were all worse than his 2018 and 2019 seasons.
Most importantly though, he didn't hit worth a shite in the ALCS or WS. Only 7 hits in those 12 games with only two for extra bases, a HR vs. Sale and the double in WS game 5. His post-season numbers aren't very good period... and it's a not insignificant 73 game sample size.
ETA: I'm not worried about Bregman long term, though. He'll be fine.

That's mostly a DAT meme. He added weight (15-20 pounds) over the off season, not sure why. but he's been plagued by leg injuries and he's slow as molasses so we blame his weight gain and fat shame him.
Most of the problem is he fell in love with the juiced ball that helped him hit 41 Homers in 2019 and has geared his game towards that. Trying to pull the ball in the air, bulking up to add power. More naturally he's a gaps guy with 20 HR power but he's not content to do that. 35-40 doubles with 15-20HR would be just fine

If this is the ball going forward I’m hoping several of these guys (namely Altuve and Bregman) go back to what got them here. Yuli seemed to after sucking in 2020.

Career high 31 HR for Yuli in 2019, 14 this year. He went back to his line drive, ground ball singles approach and won a batting title.
That Altuve single in game 5 reminded me so much so of the Altuve of old. It was an ugly swing but he put the bat on the ball and sent it back up the middle for a single. That was Altuve. You used to marvel at some of the swings he could take to put the bat on the ball and get a hit.

or he goes back to Detroit.
I think he will sign a short term contract to retire in Detroit. I think he wants to play for a team where he can win a pennant and try for a WS. I think Toronto is very much a possibility. They are the Astros from a few years ago.

To me, this is a bigger deal than anything we do in free agency. If someone can get through to these guys that their role is to get on base, the offense can keep rolling the next few years.
Let Ted and Yed hit the dingers.

MY priorities
1)a veteran OF
2-4 yr contract to a starter can play at least 2 OF spots bat no worse than 5th .
give Brantly rest(age),he can spot DH when Yordon spot starts at 1b (due to yulis age) and makes moving one of our young OFers more viable. The right signing has the effect of adding two players( the signing itself) plus maybe 2 1/2 ( resting Brantly, Yuli etc keeping them healthy for playoffs)
2. replacing Correa or signing him( he aint stayin)
3)a top shutdown closer
4/5 )SP/middle relief either or maybe both
team starting pitching might be a team strength if everyone returns ( Verlander) is healthy ( several) but if the price is right then another #2/3 lengthens the rotation We dont really have a #1. Lance is a 1 and a half
OR
a really good middle reliever(s) to protect the starters
6) catcher
even if its a backup we need another reliable bat
IMO none of our Minor Leaguers can reliably fill these roles right now .
the unknown is at SS realistically do we need to sign a full-time long term starter or can we risk a bridge to give the youth more time
good news the only REALLY expensive need is a full-time long term SS which means if the FA times changes in the new CBA we have the $$ to sign Yordon and Ted
/end thread bitches

Bregman said he bulked up to get more power. It may have even contributed to his leg injury. He really needs to go back and figure out who he is. I think he will. All the years, everyone says there is no one who studies more, works harder, etc.
Bregman should be the right handed version of Michael Brantley. If he focused on this, he could potentially win a batting title. He is just that disciplined and had a great swing before he messed with it going for the long ball.
I think he needs a sports psych badly. I could recommend one. There are some great ones in Houston.

Knock both of these out by signing Kris Bryant. Or perhaps you spend big on Starling Marte.

A lot of SPs on the market, and you're not going to get a guy like Scherzer, Gausman, or Robbie Ray, so I'm thinking the targets should be in the range of Stephen Matz, Danny Duffy, or Corey Kluber. Unless this is an area where they really want to spend the money coming off the books.

Bring Kendall Graveman back. ETA: Brooks Raley too... we shite on him, but he's not a bad RP.

With Maldy and Castro under contract, Stubbs still pre-arbitration, and Korey Lee in the wings, this isn't happening.

Thoughts on bringing Yimi back? Wasn't impressed after the trade but he came up big in the post.
And what's our rotation look like? Lance, Garcia and probably Framber are locks. Urquidy looks like an adequate starter and Stink is still under contract. Javier could potentially move back into the rotation. There's a lot of depth there, a lot of guys that probably have decent numbers at years end. But not many you can feel like will step up and own the post season and get you 6 or 7 innings.

I still love Martes on this team , might be a bit pricey
remember it's not just always how good a player they are or how much it costs to get them but how well they fit into the current squad because it's not like the Astros need a lot to win the division be back in the playoffs for anther 3-4 years
