re: DAT: Offseason ThreadPosted by ShaneTheLegLechler on 11/3/21 at 9:14 am to The Eric
Would like to see money spent on a front line starter and the pen, maybe look at insurance for short or CF among cheaper options. I’d like to see us roll with Pena and Meyers on the opening day roster though and give them a chance to become every day major leaguers.
I think Lee will be up pretty quick next year as well. He’s a good athlete and has played some OF so he could be an option to fill in there along with catcher

Catcher has to get better. Happy with his play behind the plate
I like his defense but his pitch calling is arse.
Seems to be a great teammate and I admire his attitude and guts. He’d be a great backup C but he shouldn’t be starting on a WS team.

I agree with this. Strom will only be a pitching coach. He's obviously not done as the statement did not say retiring. Padres sounds right.

We should have a decent amount of money to play with after unloading Verlander and Greinke’s contracts. I’d rather use that to fill some holes than give half of it to Correa.

Maldonado and Castro mentoring Lee once he comes up next year seems like the perfect transition. I am hoping they’re willing to use Lee at different spots like they have in the minors some time to justify carrying three catchers

agreed! For a supposedly dead ball, our pitchers sure did seem to find a way to undeaden it for the opposing offense in the ALCS and the WS

Correa to Miami.
Vote #2 for this. I do NOT think he goes to either NY team. I do not think he goes to Detroit.
Verlander - Either the Angels, Seattle, or Toronto. I do not think Houston signs him unless he gets nothing higher than his QO.

I have a really hard time seeing Miami shelling out an 8-10 year and 250-300 mil type contract. I know they did it with Stanton but they traded him right after this current ownership group took over.

Altuve is clearly regressing, Bregs has been in a 2 year rut, Yed has shown to be a postseason choker outside of 1 series, Brantley will be 35, Yuli will be 38.
Bregs and Yed clearly need to spend a good bit of time with a sports psychologist.
Altuve needs a coach who will tell him to take his pitches and what's given instead of trying to be the hero.
Look at what makes Brantley and Yuli such good hitters. They take what's given them by the pitcher. They don't force it. That's what all our players did to beat the both the Sox. We just quit doing it in the WS.

This year JV made $33 million and Greinke made $32 million but $10 million of that was paid by Arizona. So $55 million between them.
Altuve made $26 million and Bregman made $11 million. Bregmans backloaded contract kicks in 2023 when he'll make $28.5 million. So between the two of them they'll make....$54.5 million. Basically the same as JV and ZG cost us this year.

Bregman’s deal kicks up in 2023. Still plenty of money to play with depending on where Crane wants to take the payroll to and what the new rules are for a luxury tax etc under the CBA. Correa made 12 million this year and is also off the books now

I think Verlander either accepts the QO in order to hopefully build his value for one last contract, or he goes back to Detroit.

I'd love for the Astros to keep Correa, but he's going to want way too much money and someone else will give it to him.

Yeah I meant 2023, fat fingered it.
2023 becomes a bit of a rest year outside of the big money for Tuve and Bregs. Coming off the books after next season
Brantley $16M
Pressly $10M
Yuli $8M
Baez $5.5
Maldy $5M
Diaz $4M (Arb estimate)
Castro $3.25M
Montero $3.1M
So $54.8 million coming off the books in free agency following 2022.

It will be interesting to see what the new limits are for a luxury tax (and how it’s structured) and if there’s draft penalties or whatever. I think that could determine a lot. I think Crane will be pretty willing to spend but probably not to the levels of past years unless something falls in our lap. Changes to service time stuff could also see Tucker and Alvarez among others due for free agency quicker than expected.
Pena Meyers and Lee becoming everyday contributors would help a ton with flexibility going forward. We have a nice base of affordable talent but some obvious holes that need to be filled if we want to keep contending

How does the farm system look? I know we unloaded a few guys in order to build our "win now" roster.
Anything coming up the pipes to be excited for.
Does Forrest Whitley ever produce or should we just cut bait?

Depleted, but not completely empty.
Korey Lee, Jeremy Pena, and Pedro Leon are the top position guys. Leon needs to cut down on the strikeouts big time if he's going to have an impact in the majors, but those other two guys could make a 2022 impact.
Hunter Brown is the pitcher to know other than Whitley (who you should forget) but after him it's guys like Ivey and Solomon who have already seen some big league action. And Hunter Brown really needs to work on his command, 50 walks in 100.1 IP in 2021 is not a good sign. 131 Ks is great, though.
re: DAT: Offseason ThreadPosted by ShaneTheLegLechler on 11/3/21 at 10:35 am to The Eric
Pretty top heavy I think. Jeremy Pena (SS) Korey Lee (C) and Hunter Brown (P) are all top 100 prospect types who are close to the majors and Pedro Leon (SS/CF) was a big Cuban prospect signed last year who is close as well. Whitley is a wild card and probably doesn’t have any trade value. It thins out quite a bit after that and the draft picks lost have taken their toll.
We don’t have a ton of ammo to make a big trade which is why it’s important those guys (and Meyers) become at least dependable contributors and we make moves in FA. We get our picks back this year and should get compensation picks for Correa and potentially Verlander leaving in free agency which will help restock what’s been lost.

With Meyers, McCormick, and Siri all at the MLB level it seems like one is going to need to be moved in the near future.

Yeah they all have options I think so you still have some flexibility on that front. The timeline on all that stuff could change this winter though with some rule changes. I don’t think they’d hesitate to move Chas or Siri though in a smaller deal if you can fill another spot (like for a ML reliever with some team control for instance)
