His agent is putting asany teams names in the hat as possible but there are really only 3-4 teams in on Bryce.

Is it possible Crane says screw it, and writes a check?

Can confirm the Astros have agreed to to a deal with C Robinson Chirinos for one year, pending physical. He played the last 6 six seasons with the Rangers.

Odd move. I don’t hate chrinos but from my understanding he graded out poorly in framing? would seem more of a platoon guy and given how they viewed stassi in the second half he’s a no go. Surprising if he’s our full time catcher

Yeah if he’s our backup option then it’s a great signing

If the thought process is him platooning with Stassi then we riot

Maybe they're opening the door for Stassi and Stubbs to compete for the job. Seems so with a one-year deal for Chirinos.

This also makes me think they are about to spend significant money on a bat, likely left-handed, while perhaps using Tucker to get a pitcher. Just spit-balling.

I was thinking possibly more along the lines of they know Stassi/Stubbs ain’t it and this is a depth move?

No idea. Will be very interesting to see how next 10 days play out

Yeah, I don't think Stubbs has any chance with his build beyond backup. Stassi is JAG.

Catcher isn't that important if you are good everywhere else. That means DH, 1B and LF must be better, if Chirinos really is the top option.

Yea chirinos isn't a bad get if we are getting more, either another catcher or some bigger bats.

Chirinos is kind of gross.

Why not just keep Maldonado?

I don’t see the point in chirinos at all.

Just a bit better bat than Marisnick.
Just a touch better behind the plate than Gattis.

He cant be our starter. And If he's a backup, why? Stassi is younger, cheaper and better defensively.

If you’re looking for an interesting insight into the Astros player development stuff, take a look at Kyle Boddys (Driveline Guy). He went on a rant about how far we are head of most, if not all teams.

quote:

Most - if not all - MLB teams drastically underestimate just how far behind they are the Astros when it comes to a unified scouting and player development system, especially the latter with regards to investment. It is staggering how far behind the median MLB team is.

quote:

In baseball, GMs just... ignore these things. The Astros having their pitching staff that rivals the Indians' staff, not all developed, but traded for with prospects that were NOT their #1 hitter and #1 pitcher should cause any GM to wonder just how the frick that was possible.

quote:

Sig is the smartest person I've ever met, and I've met some brilliant people. Elias was my boss' boss when I worked there; he was great as well. But Jim Crane deserves a lot of credit. Jim made it possible for Luhnow to embark on scorched earth. To reinvent a front office.

Interesting stuff. I guess he worked for the Astros at one time?

Chirinos is around league average for a starting (100 ish games) MLB catcher. Suzuki would have been a nice move with what he got from Washington but I don’t see a problem with this and don’t think it takes us out of the running for Realmuto. Chirinos>>>Stassi, I don’t know what Stassi’s numbers were after like May last year but it had to be horrific

I love the Chirinos move. Great value. He's better than people think. Selling the farm for realmuto is not the wise move. Land a big Of bat or goldschmidt and sign a starter.

Well, we are either going cheap to save assets and money for a big bat or we’re settling.

Me and Ryno agree. That’s odd.

I think the most important piece right now is a starter. I don’t like the full rotation right now.

McHugh is a perfect bullpen, long relief guy. He’s not a starter anymore. I don’t like relying on a second year guy that hasn’t pitched a full season in the majors in James. I don’t care he throws 100. That’s a great novelty and all but can he be consistent when hitters figure him out?

Starter at this point is the most important piece. I’m praying Eovaldi is signed.
