We already paid him $50 M for 1 game in 2 seasons. And regardless of where he ends up, I think our lineup would bust his arse in a playoff game

I think we paid him $66MM for one game in two seasons.

Not worth a debate, but Verlander’s grandkids will never work on the interest earned off of Kate’s income alone. LOL

JV’s eventual deal will say all we need to know about his priorities and how he feels about his time in Houston.

I just do not get this argument at all. The total amount of money doesn't matter at all. I would never begrudge someone for want a 60-70% pay raise. Say all you want about income tax, but you will still have a higher net after that raise. Also, because only home games are impacted by where you live, the difference, while there, isn't as high as it could be.

It's a job. Why in the world would anyone expect someone to not take that kind of an increase if you can get it?

This is the part that bothers me. They have not thrown the money at major areas of need recently while letting key talent leave. It has worked out but 22' was very fortunate with the offensive deficiencies and relying on a bullpen that likely is never that dominant again.

I'm not expecting much. However signing JV probably means a trade of one of the other pitchers which could land a bat although not a huge name.

The market for CF and 1B are not ideal. It's not like SS.

When push comes to shove, I can see where it has to be tempting to fill our holes from the inside

Chas has proven to be serviceable enough to likely get us to Gilbert, especially with the hedge on Meyers returning to '21 pre-injury form

And we really haven't given anyone a legitimate opportunity at 1B

There's just not going to be enough urgency to do anything until the trade deadline

I think this happens, regardless of JV. Urquidy and Stanek are probably both gone. It is clear, Dusty is calling the shots on player/personnel. He doesn't like Stanek and he won't be around next year.

Urquidy, Stanek and Whitley could actually bring in a nice bat. Have no idea who, but I'm sure there are a few out there that could be part of a trade.

There is also the LF/DH issue. If they’re going with Yed as the everyday LF (which I’m NOT in favor of) they have to fill the DH slot. And I know Brantley’s been mentioned but he will get hurt somehow. I really wish they would pursue someone like Benintendi for LF and keep Yed at DH. I could live with Chas in CF under that scenario.

Is chasing Benny and Abreu out of the question if JV walks?

From a money standpoint not at all. I bet they get around 35mm or so a year combined. Would we be that aggressive in free agency when historically we haven’t been? I think that’s the real question

Why would they keep him? Dusty clearly has no usage for him. He's merely taking the spot of Dusty's coveted left-specialist role.

Dusty will have his left-specialist.

And Urquidy has already been part of one proposed trade. So he clearly is expendable.

Stanek has a role in the regular season because you need the depth. He walked 31 dudes 54.2 innings last year and Abreu, Neris, Montero (for the most part) all filled up the strike zone so they were the better options in the post and it played out that way.

Not to say Stanek couldn't have had effective innings in the post, but the idea clearly was let's keep BA cooking and go with guys we know are going to be in the zone.

CF was never the hole it was made out to be, unlike catcher and first base. The analytics back that up. They should roll with Chas, Jake and maybe see Leon/Dirden soon. Fix the other spots with money

Healthy Jake Meyers with a normal offseason and spring training? Yes, I'm ready to roll with him.

Agreed, I'm okay with running it back at CF with that tandem UNLESS they are able to swing a deal for a Bryan Reynolds type.

But you have to upgrade significantly at two of DH/LF, 1B, or catcher.

Exactly. And it will be a huge indicator of whether or not that Schwab article was legit or not. If Crane REALLY wanted Marte, he could have done it himself as he reportedly did with Verlander. The scenario that was described flew in the face of a typical manager/subordinate relationship.

i am on that train. Meyers hit .260 as a rookie in 2021. If he can get back to that then i will be happy.

If chas/jake slip, then try to fill that at the dead line. Spend the money on some power at first.

Slightly change of scenario... what are you GMs willing to give up at the trade deadline for Ohtani?

Ryno for GM.

Pitching carried us this year. Pitching carried us through the playoffs when our best bats were nowhere to be found. Pitching, particularly relief pitching is volatile year to year.

The shift ban likely impacts our pitching, particularly Framber as a groundball pitcher. So we're going to need more offense. Can't continue to hope pitching covers for holes at C, 1B, LF and CF.
