Three years of JV at 40 seems steep. You’re counting on him to age like Nolan Ryan. Not many do.
Yep, my guess is that JV and Crane had a discussion, since they're close.
JV: I want $40M for 3 years. Scherzer got it.
Crane: No can do...I'll give you 2 at $33-35.
JV: I think I can get more.
Crane: You go try and see if the Yankees, Dodgers, Mets, or maybe Braves will pay that. We both know you want to get to 300 wins. Most teams can't give you those wins.
Crane: Come back and talk to me again if they won't pay.
I don't think anyone is going to give him that money for 3 years. I think JV would rather be an Astro, but wants to see what he can get. Can't say that I blame him.

Crane matching what the Dodgers or Mets would pay is actually a better deal thanks to taxes.
ETA: I don't think the Braves or Yankees are seriously in the running.

Probably not, but they are the only other ones with an outside chance. He needs to play for a 100 win team.

I have heard from people who spoke directly to him that he and Kate are most interested in the largest return. They supposedly hate NY and LA as a place to live, which makes things interesting, but I wouldn't hold my breath that he resigns with us.

Dodgers and Mets will make him the best offer
State taxes excluded, it will still be more than what I would be willing to pay, given the team's situation presently
Like Jwho, the 3 years don't bother me near what the annual pay does
Then throw on top of that the fact that you probably don't really need him. Remember 2021? He wasn't there

I don’t blame him for seeing what’s out there. He should. I wouldn’t blame the Astros if they set a limit on years and/or AAV and didn’t go past one or both. They should.
He’s part of 2 titles here and he’s instrumental in both. If he leaves, thank him for his service and move on. If he comes back, welcome him back with open arms.

If he dies he dies./metaphorically speaking.

JV should be announced for Cy young in a little over an hour on MLB Network

Verlander on Astros negotiations: "No, I haven't spoken to Jim (Crane) since the last time we spoke. He texted me that he wants to be involved going forward. I don't know what the future holds. ... This journey with the Astros has been nothing short of incredible."
Verlander on free agency: "I'm going to be in a situation where the market will dictate this and we'll see what happens. Obviously, there are other people that are interested. Jim (Crane) understands that."

Well, I’m glad we got that settled. LOL

The more I think about it, the less likely it becomes
We have younger arms in Valdez and Javier that will be our 1 and 2 in a playoff series, which JV’s ego may not accept
But on top of that, if you give him an over-priced deal, where does that leave you when dealing with the arms that come due
I mean you can lock up Valdez for 5 years with what JV wants for 3

I really have no issue with how either one of them is handling this. More power to him if he gets that huge 3 year deal from a team in more dire need of starting pitching. Dude just won a unanimous Cy Young. I'd fricking cash in too.
If this is it, it was a very mutually beneficial relationship. Only got two gold flags in MMP and he was a big part of both. Wish him well.
All that being said, I think it's very encouraging that Crane didn't just up and stroke a blank check to his buddy. He's staying pragmatic in a situation where other owners might not.

I’m fine if he walks as long as they throw the money at a couple of bats.
I will take a WS any way I can get it, but honestly, we sort of ended up being the team of destiny. To have the pitching we had, especially the bullpen, is an anomaly in this era of baseball. I kept telling Obi-Wan Jr all throughout the season that it wasn’t sustainable….something he was delighted to bring back up to me as we hoisted the trophy.
But you guys know this is not the norm. I just don’t think a staff ERA under 4 and a hitting line of 000 050 000 every night is something to bank on. JUST keeping Brantley and Yuli isn’t going to cut it.

That’s not exactly fair. Dude is at the twilight of his career. If I were him with a young daughter that I can ensure she and her grandchildren will be comfortable in the future, I’d put money ahead of nostalgia.
He could also say the same about crane, “I love Verlander but not as much as I love money.”

It's true though. JV and Kate are arse-loaded with money.
Posted on 11/16/22 at 10:18 pm to Jwho77
Not worth a debate, but Verlander’s grandkids will never work on the interest earned off of Kate’s income alone. LOL
JV’s eventual deal will say all we need to know about his priorities and how he feels about his time in Houston.
I don’t think you’ll see him sign with Houston for a deal minus state tax equivalent to his offers from LA and NY, and we will come to appreciate that
We already paid him $50 M for 1 game in 2 seasons. And regardless of where he ends up, I think our lineup would bust his arse in a playoff game

I agree completely.
I’d love to have him back in the rotation. But not at the expense of keeping the rest of the rotation together. I can see JV winning another CY next season.
I can also see him stumbling to a 5+ ERA. I’m not emotionally attached to the guy. But I do enjoy seeing his name on the back of an Astros jersey.
If he bolts, he will never face the Astros in a meaningful playoff game.

Off topic but Dick’s has a 50% off sale on the WS gear. It’s going fast.
