Team friendly for me would mean nothing guaranteed, not 1 penny. That's how much faith I have in him being healthy.
So, the veterans' minimum?

let's springer walk but offers the bank to Verlander at 40yo.
People always say it this way...he let Springer walk. I don't think Springer ever had any desire to stay here. It's not like it's totally up to Crane and the Astros.
Springer wanted to go back to the NE as fast as he could.

As for Brantley, I agree with wahoocs that Brantley as a full-time DH would be good. I just don’t know if the Astros view the DH spot being manned by someone who does it on a full-time basis. I hope I’m wrong and that they get Brantley or a bigger bat to mostly DH.
Evidently his clubhouse presence is really big as well. Our lineup would have looked so different during the postseason with his bat.

No way will JV seriously entertain going to NYY. He is not going to put himself and his family in that environment that had Yankees stars getting booed by their own fans. That's just something I don't think he would consider in the twilight of his career.
100%. JV wants it to be fun now. He wants a family atmosphere. He wants a team that will help him get lots and lots of wins.

Lack of state income tax can also help the Astros to match other teams' offers, especially the Cali and NY clubs.

I didn’t suggest signing Brantley at all costs. If you can get him for a year, two at the most, for the right price, do it unless there are other, better options. When he’s healthy, he can still hit. Play him 3 or 4 times a week, and ease in a bat like Yainier Diaz at DH on other days.

Altuve and Yordan won silver slugger awards. Altuve with his 6th Silver Slugger breaks a tie with Biggio for most in franchise history and he sits behind only Ryne Sandberg (7) for most Silver Slugger awards by a 2nd baseman.

and a good pickup for the Rays ownership looking for a new stadium

There is zero chance Tampa is giving that kind of money out

Do we really want Verlander back? He’s been dreadful in the playoffs.
He had a playoff ERA of 2.24 in 2017, but that was his only good year.
In 2018 his ERA was 4.21
In 2019 his ERA was 4.45
In 2022 his ERA was 5.85
He’s been bad, and he’s gotten worse in the playoffs every year.
We could literally put any other pitcher on the roster out there and they can do at least as well as an ERA of 5.00. And with the kind of money we’d be paying him? No thanks.
I imagine there are better ways to spend that money to upgrade the roster than on Justin Verlander.

Zero.
There are maybe 6 teams willing to spend.

I want JV on the team until his arm falls off.
He’s a winner and he makes everyone else better.

In the regular season. He has not been a winner in the playoffs.

I don’t think you can draw a lot of conclusions from a 12 or so start sample size spread across 4 years. If you can I would love to hear concrete reasons why
There’s a good argument to be made for letting Verlander walk (we are absolutely loaded with pitching depth) but this is not one of them in my opinion

Interesting that MLB Network is saying Teoscar is on the market.

Ryno is an ageist. Are you going to suggest we euthanize Owlie next?

He’s pitched nearly 73 innings in his past 3 playoffs, and has an ERA of 4.75.
I don’t know what to tell you. It’s just not good.
For what he’d be getting paid he has to be virtually guaranteeing playoff wins. And he has not done that at all.

Dylan Lee started and won a World Series game last year. Baseball is random as frick. There’s absolutely nobody that can guarantee playoff wins, so in your eyes nobody is worth 35-40m a year, which is fine.
73 innings spread across 4 years is not a big sample size at all. He’s a different pitcher now than he was in 2018 for obvious reasons. If you want to draw that conclusion without substance as to why it’s difficult to take it seriously in my opinion
