The #Astros offseason in summary: OUT: Luke Gregerson, Francisco Liriano, Mike Fiers
IN: Gerrit Cole, Joe Smith, Hector Rondon
I’m intrigued by Cole, because of our tendencies to get pitchers to use their best pitch more often, he’ll throw a bunch more sliders, and a bunch less fastballs. Which bodes well for a bounce back year
ETA: also, hanging on to Alvarez is huge, we set up well for acquiring just about any player on the market at the trade deadline if needed

If Cole listens to Strom and the team's analytics, he'll be a stud. It's that simple. His off-speed pitches are all good. He just needs to use them more, if not all equally.

If Cole has a verlander type post trade performance you have to start thinking anytime we offer anybody other gms will be wondering what is ludlow trying to pull/what does strom see that we don’t.

Anyone worried about his elbow issues?

Another point worth mentioning is that we now have 2 guys who pitched 200 innings last year. Remember that our bullpen got stretched a little thin and rendered ineffective during that stretch where we weren't having any starters make it through 6 innings.
Mike Fiers held the high mark at 153.1. Morton pitched 146.2. Having Verlander and Cole and hopefully a healthy Keuchel get to 200 innings could be huge for keeping the bullpen fresh. Also, McHugh seems like an odd man out at this point but McCullers and Morton are almost sure bets to miss time with injuries this year so we could need Jabroni to fill in

I fully expect Morton to be in the BP as a 2 inning guy.
Morton was legit ace for the first 4 innings of most starts and then the cliff. If/when they move Morton to the BP I think he will dominate.
I hope they let either Colin M Start in the 5 or Peacock. I think Morton’s would be great in that BP role. Ultimately,if Morton is the 5 that means you have the cock in the pen and that’s still a good deal. I just think I would rather him in the BP.

Only thing left that would make me happy is a move to push Kenny G out of the closer role.

Solid regular season. The regular season is your ticket to the playoffs. I understand that he blew up in the playoffs, but let’s not act like the guy wasn’t an integral part of the season last year.
If he returns back to form for the regular season and they make the playoffs again next year, we will have to cross that road when we get there.
(I, personally, think LMJ should be moved to closer)

Yep people are way overreacting to Giles. He was one of the best in the big leagues during the regular season last year
That was his first experience in the playoffs. I think he’ll be fine for the playoffs this year with a little experience under his belt.

Someone said it on TCB, so credit to whoever that was....

So we have now turned Cosart into Jake Marisnick, Lance McCullers, Gerrit Cole and Francis Martes (I’m aware other pieces were involved but it’s still unreal how incredible that trade turned out to be for us)
Once again, Ludlow is playing 3D chess while the rest of the league is playing checkers.

Will be a lot of revolving pieces on the back end of the rotation to keep innings down and figure out best places for the second half of season and beyond
McHugh, LMJ, Morton, Martes, Peacock and Paulino will provide a pitching depth that the Astros have likely never known.

Meh, honestly at no point in the regular did I feel confident when Giles came in to close a game.
Sure he looked good some nights, but he would just as easily walk batters and put himself in a jam.
Would rather someone more consists on the backend regular season or playoffs don’t care.

Where does Armenteros and Whitley fit in there?
