Rangers are pretty thin at catcher.
I'm thinking Luhnow must have his eye on a FA he feels good about or a Rule5 guy. That's the only reason he'd punt centano and leave a 40-man spot open.

Centeno struggled throwing runners out a graded out very poorly at framing pitches. He delivered a few clutch hits for us over the season, but he sucked pretty bad behind the plate. I don't think the Astros care about offensive numbers from their catchers as much as we'd like,

Stassi is considerably better defensively, so I am guessing they feel they are ok going into next season with McCann & Stassi with Gattis DH'ing full time while maybe getting the very rare start behind the plate in emergencies. If they do bring in a free agent catcher, i am sure it will be a defensive wiz who probably cant hit his body weight in batting average
edit: and maybe the Stros banked on centeno not being claimed by anyone too. Damn Rangers

I don't think there was enough offense to overcome his defensive liabilities.
We won a WS w McCann and Gattis back there. I think they feel pretty good about their chances of finding someone to fill Gattis' shoes defensively.
Not sure if I mentioned it here or not, but at the fund raiser I attended recently, Strom told a story about the ALCS Game 5 in NY. He went to visit Keuchel on the mound and Gattis walked up. Strom said we must have our signals crossed up. We're supposed to pitch Headley up and Hicks down. Gattis said he got his H's mixed up. Keuchel shook his head and said white up and black down.
Gattis won't be catching many games next year. Maybe what Centeno and Stassi got this year. Maybe.

Nick Hundley and Rene Rivera would both make sense as FAs who would be cheap. I could see us dealing for a catcher as well instead of signing one

Not crazy about Lucroy... something about the way he projects his attitude just seems like he wouldn't be a good add to the clubhouse.
