Why are we trying to move on from Evan gattis?
I like Gattis but he doesn’t bring a ton to the equation. If he’s a DH you can do a lot better and if he’s catching he’s poor defensively.

A full season (or really just 3/4) of Gattis at DH could result in numbers more like 2015 or 2016 though, in the neighborhood of 30 HR and 80 RBI, that's not bad at all.
And he's your emergency C/LF/1B.

Supposedly Lucroy is at career lows right now both defensively and offensively.
He was terrible with the rangers last year, but had an uptick in Colorado.

Lucroy would be a worse signing than Yuli. Big mistake

I never knew the Yuli signing was that bad.

Realistically, who would Luhnow get that would be a lot better?
How much would that person cost and what would adding said person do to the long term payroll and roster?

J.D. Martinez for a shite load of money.

I would rather have more ABs for Moran/Davis/Fisher/Jake personally and sign someone like Lucroy. Gattis will probably make 7mm in arbitration, if you sign Lucroy for 2/24 and then see what the younger guys can do with those ABs I would like it. As far as using money I think that's much better, and you still have a ton left to upgrade the pen.
If they were to trade Gattis and sign a DH only type I agree it would be kind of dumb since they have a backlog of guys on the 40 man roster already who can fill that role and they kind of need to see what they can do pretty soon on some of them, like Moran.
If they disappoint there always plenty of those types available at the deadline who can fill it.

Going from Gattis to Moran/Davis/Fisher would be a pretty serious downgrade. For a team that'll still hold championship hopes, that's a move that would make little sense. He hit 27 and 32 homers as our full time DH before moving into a backup role. Even for $7 million, that's way cheap vs what you'd pay for a hitter like him on the open market.

But we don't know that. One or a combination of the young guys could easily be as good or more productive. We can't find out if they never get a real chance.

Exactly. If one of them shines you have a regular, or even a platoon guy, for the next several years on the cheap. That’s more money to spend on the free agent/trade market and most importantly resigning guys.
If they suck DH/1B types are available in spades every year at the deadline. I want to see what those guys can do

Look past the home run totals and it’s really not. He still never walks, strikes out quite a bit and doesn’t have a position. I bet you could get Mark Reynolds for similar or less in FA and he’s not much different at the plate. I’m not trying to shite on Gattis, I would just rather see those ABs go to the younger guys

I said I would self-ban if the Stros actually picked up someone before the deadline, and they did...Francisco Liriano.
I haven't posted since July 31.
I guess I can lift the ban now that the Astros are 2017 World Series Champions!!!
Go 'Stros!!!!!!!!!!

I saw that 40 man roster deadline is tonight. Anything to expect on that front?

We will add Cionel Perez for sure, there are other possibilities like Laureano and some pitchers

Regular guys are going to get hurt, so there will almost certainly be chances throughout the season for the young guys to get regular playing time.
