Speaking with reporters for the first time since the Astros acquired hard-throwing Ken Giles from the Phillies -- presumably to be their closer -- relief pitcher Luke Gregerson was adamant Thursday he shouldn't lose his job as closer.

"I don't see any reason why I should lose my job because of it," he said. "I was pretty happy with how things went last year. I think it could have went even better, just a few outings here and there [were rough]. We'll just move forward and see where it takes us."

Great.

Let them compete for it.

If Gregs can't hold on to it, then he's got nobody to blame but himself.

Go to Teams and select who you want, this is what I read the other day regarding Yankees invites.

crawfishboxes.com is a very good Astros site for articles on the team and system.

They had a good run down of the Fangraphs prospect rankings

Fangraphs is really high on our boy Tyler White. We've all said it but I think he hits his way into the roster fairly quickly, perhaps out of spring training if Gattis isn't ready to go, and ends up getting a lot of ABs at DH and splitting some time with Reed at 1B also

I still think if both White and Tucker tear it up in spring, Ted's brother stays and White starts in Fresno.

Gattis' injury doesn't free up a roster spot as much as it allows room for Tucker.

Gregerson has always come off as full of himself and not a team player.

You may be right... although I've never gotten that vibe. Seems like a typical closer to me -- high strung, high ego, high emotion.

Not sure which guy should be the closer, but I'd be pretty disappointed in Gregerson if he just laid over and said, "ummm, yeah. you can have my closer role kid. no problem."

Instead, he's going to make the kid earn the spot -- exactly what I would think the front office would want him to do.

We don't need a closer. We should play the matchups.

If you play matchups, you still choose the flamethrower with the tiny ERA who is likely to K the batter.

I only remember one time last year where he really blew up, but it was a big one. Hinch went to pull him after he gave up a couple of hits and a walk, and he refused to leave the game. It was clear he didn't have his best stuff and the game was still in question. He was thinking about himself...not the team. I haven't read anything negative about him from his teammates though so hopefully it was an anomaly.

He's not even a closer though. He was a setup man his entire career (and a damn good one) until last year. He got the closers role because he was our best option for the job. That may not be the case now.

The world knows the team got Giles to be the typical 9th inning flame thrower we lacked last year. No one has been anointed anything yet but the best thing Greg could have done is just say "I'll do whatever makes the team better." Instead he went with "How do you think I did last year? I don't see any reason I should lose my job."

I don't want a Papelbon situation with a douche pitcher getting butt hurt that he was bumped an inning earlier and becomes a distraction.

on AJ reed

I would argue his hit tool is already above average, with a very real chance of being as good as his power tool. To me, he looks like a near-elite overall hitter
