LINK Public service announcement from Darius Leonard about HBCU'S/ FCS:

" This is one thing I wanna tell these HS kids. You dont have to go to a P5 school....S. Carolina State has 4 HOFers. Clemson has 1. USCe has 0. If you have a zero star ( like me) that doesn't mean you're not gonna be somebody.......Do not let them get into your head ( and make you believe you need a p5)" - Darius Leonard

Despite being a 0 star Darius Leonard got the proper food, nutrition , development, ample facilities, coaching at tiny S Carolina State & all without being on television weekly. Became NFL DROTY & 3x 1st team all pro . Teammates with another NFL player in Javon Hargrave at S Carolina State for 3 seasons.

These kids do not need you sir( Mr Power 5).

He's not wrong. If you can play, you'll get a shot, regardless of where you go to school.

This is all true. If you're good enough, you'll find your way into the NFL regardless of where you played college ball.

But if I'm an 18-year old kid, would I really want to play at a school that has "ample facilities" compared to gaining access to the crazy shite facilities and stadiums so many P5 schools now offer? Some may choose to go to a smaller school, but I believe most won't be able to resist that.

ETA: And I'm willing to bet Leonard would've too if given the opportunity as a recruit.

He's not wrong. But even if you take NIL money out of the equation, recruits still like cool facilities, playing on TV, playing tougher competition, and having celebrity status on campus. I'm also willing to bet that guys like Devonta Smith and Jamarr Chase got some benefit from going up against Pat Surtain and Derek Stingley every day for 2+ years

They’ll have an easier chance for exposure with the HBCU legacy bowl coming up.

I still think most kids would rather be in the best stadiums, best facilities, national TV coverage, etcetc. But if you prefer the smaller school setup, more power to you.

This seems like the best benefit of playing at an elite program.

I respect this answer that P5's go the Neverland route to enticing teen boys , but you do understand that they don't need them like some: "can't develop at a FCS/ HBCU, lack of facilities or food , inferior competition, no television, etc.....

The NFL doesn't even invest money into the type of facilities that many P5's do because it's unnecessary & their facilities are ample. We're dealing with 17 year old boys & its obvious many won't turn it down . Especially the dream of playing on Television weekly -to stroke their young egos. But don't try to tell us men who know better that these kids need these over- the -top facilities/ TV exposure & are making a mistake by going FCS/ HBCU.

He probably would have jumped to a P5 school if the one time transfer rule was in place for him.

It’s the same reason the NFL doesn’t want kids for 3 years.

You do so much physical maturing between 18-22. So many guys are no where near a finished product.

It proves that schools like S.C. State have ample facilities, coaching, nutrition, competition, etc... to " develop" a player that can play in the NFL. Travis Hunter will be fine ( if he can play) . Myles Garrett / Chase Young would have been fine at most any school that they chose just like Darius Leonard.

I just get tired of the P5 chest thumping (especially SEC schools) about how these kids needed them to be developed.

But most need a P5 school to be drafted high and get a good rookie deal. How many players get to their 2nd deal?

So Uber talented, top 1%, players are going to make it to the NFL no matter what? No shite.

It’s the other 99% that benefit from the exposure a P5 provides.

I mean Physically fournette looked ready to play in the NFL out of high school.

Does that mean St Aug has everything you need to develop j to an NFL player if you are a genetic freak?

Not really.

You also don’t need world class facilities and top notch instructors to understand and advance theoretical particle physics if your a mathematics savant. I guess we don’t need our best and brightest going to the best schools any longer because the absolute top of the gene pool doesn’t need additional help.

Now imagine if S Carolina State had access to 4/5 stars like P5's with your enticements that teens fall prey to. You have complete access to 3-5 star athletes that small schools like S C State don't. P5's bring the best to campus & cherry pick the very best & process out the rest.

We know arrogant p5 fans understand more about making the NFL than Darius Leonard. Get over yourselves Mr P5. Most kids that are successful in the NFL would make it at any school they attend.

You’re right, but they have a MUCH better shot when receiving better than “just good enough” nutrition, training, and coaching.
