How is California taxing him on income already earned?

Players get taxed by the "work time/days" they spend in whatever state they play.

For instance we have a Monday night game in Dallas and leave Fri, return Tues; you claim the tax rate of the days while in Texas

Base salary is earned only over the 18-week regular season, after which player contracts are not used. Instead, players are paid a flat fee per round from a league-funded pool, which is generally lower than their regular weekly salary.

I’m still not following how darnold would owe more in taxes than he would receive in payment

If they could just get one team to announce a boycott of the SB early in week 1 of the 2-week break to watch the NFL and the state of Cali start sweating.

What would the NFL do if both teams said, "You have one week to find a different state and venue to play the game or this ain't happening."....?

I'd absolutely love to see this.

Believe this is saying that CA is going to calculate the taxes off of 8/365 x annual compensation, which will wipe out any flat fee pool money he’s going to get.

My gosh I don’t see how even the most famous actor/actress in America could make it or afford a mansion living in California. That is absolutely insane.

Looks like they’re dividing his annual income by 365 days and taxing him based on 8 days being worked in CA since the teams are there all week.

So he’s on the Seahawks… does that include their games against the 49ers and Rams (and Chargers) ?

This is basically Californias way of robbing high income people who dont live there but happen to pass through on business.

They are betting that can get away with it and thus far are right.

It will only change if players demand no more events there

Because he gets his annual base salary from the Seahawks regardless of how far they make it in the postseason. Players on SB teams get additional bonuses from the league and its equal for every player on the team. Nice amount for guys on league minimum type contracts, but its chump change for a player who makes $30M a year.

Since the Seahawks are in California for 8 days for SB week, CA is taxing those players based on 8/365 of their total annual salary, not just the SB bonus. So Darnold will have to pay CA taxes on 8 days worth of his $27.5M annual salary instead of just the $103K or $178K Super Bowl bonus from the league

if that’s how they figure it out, then the players union should demand that all pre-Super Bowl activities and practices be held in Nevada, where there is no income income tax, and only play the actual game on Super Bowl Sunday in California.

If that’s not bad enough, also keep in mind that for reasons that I cannot figure out, while California has the highest state income taxes in the country they exempt lottery winners/winnings from state income taxation. That just seems bizarre.
