I know it's unfair to compare Players from distant eras ala Babe Ruth vs. Bob Gibson. But what about athletes only a generation or two removed? Could Mel Blount cover Calvin Johnson? Could Mike Singletary stop Pierre Thomas? Could Ron Guidry mow down Albert Pujols?

Realizing that nutrition, training and simple genetic factors have made todays athletes stronger, faster, better, I've always wondered if, for instance, you took the 85 Bears, and lined them up against the 2011 Saints, what would happen. Could the 74 Yankees compete with the 2010 Cardinals?
I suspect that, just as Olympic records from 30 years ago have been shattered, that the current teams would simply destroy the earlier ones.

Modern teams would dominate. I assume they are much deeper.

yes

Basketball- Wilt & Jordan would still be the best at their positions

Baseball- Nolan Ryan would probably have more strikeouts in today's game then he did

Football- Joe Montana, John Elway, & Dan Marino would all still be all-pro

At certain positions - yes.

I think you can put an Johnny Unitas in a team today and he'll do pretty well.

Gotta agree with you...

Except for Mj, he will always transcend time in most people's minds.

People from the 70s and 80s would compete because that was in the current era of the black athlete. Teams from the 50s and 60s however would get slaughtered.

Imagine a national champ in football from the 1950s going up against LSU this year. That would be BEYOND brutal and someone might even get killed.

i think they could without a doubt.

some sports have been greatly improved because of technology though and not necessarily the athlete becoming that much better(golf, tennis).

probably not. would be a close game imo.

although everyone knew your answers were going to be yes because you refuse to believe that maybe these ancient history athletes/teams arent as good as some of these modern day teams/athletes

This is beyond a doubt your worst logic used to date. Yes... a base defense with 8 men in the box would stop the most prolific passing attack in league history.

The big difference in football players today is size. I have no doubt Montana or even Unitas could compete today.

The average O or D lineman of the 1960s -- I dont know.

To be fair todays 46 can be used to put pressure on the QB like how the Jets do it....it isn't a defense that stacks the box only to stop the run like it used to be....but the way it was used in the 80s was to stop the run. It is very ineffective against teams that work on timing routes though so once again PJ is WRONG!!!

The 46 wouldn't work against saints because they would formation them out of it and use bubbles and slips as a run game.
