To be fair the 46 is used to put pressure on the QB....it isn't a defense that stacks the box to stop the run.

It does both, but the Saints offense is just ridiculous, and it's not like Brees holds onto the ball. How do you cover (consistently) guys like Graham and Colston with Singletary, Marshall, or any of their other LB's in the middle of the field?

Yes... a base defense with 8 men in the box would stop the most prolific passing attack in league history.

I agree with you....it is worthless against a team that runs great timing routes like the Saints do. I am confident that the ONLY thing PJ know about the 46 is that the bears ran it.

You are wrong here. YOU KNOW what kind of PRESSURE they would put on BREES??? It would be unreal.

Depends on if they get caught up in modern football. Could you imagine them waking up tomorrow and seeing the spread

The Bears were great at it because of their freak athletes at the time.....the only problem is all of the Saints players today are bigger faster, and stronger than the players in the 80s.

How are they going to pressure once the Edgee is taken away by formation Peej?

You have to realize they'll also replace lineman for a DB to match, taking the nose away

That is a huge factor but even more important is that the line players in the 70s were almost all under 300lbs.....there is no way they could compete, even with a good college team! They didn't have dudes like Orlando Pace back then!!!!

When people consider the past players/teams compared to present I usually think about it as if the past players were contemporaries of those today and have the benefit of today's knowledge about training, nutrition and year round conditioning.

Some sports like baseball are much more comparable across generations as compared to contact sports like football.

So, yes, I believe the 27 Yankees or 29 A's could hang today as they were.

Of coarse a lot of individuals throughout history could come in today and still be stars. You can't compare teams as a whole to ones of today though. Those old teams would get slaughtered. I mean in the mid 80 you didn't even see 300 pound players very often, much less ones that can run. I'd say the league is ever evolving every year to bigger more athletic teams in general.

Well of course. But, imagine if instead of having been born during the 1950's and 60's, the Bears were contemporaries born during the 1970's and 1980's.

This a FANTASY THREAD. The Bears in 1985 were the BEST D IN HISTORY. In their prime they would SKULLfrick The Saints O. BUT carry on.

Back on point. YES there are certain athletes that could compete in THIS day and age. Joe greene, Jack Lambert, Gale Sayers, Jim Brown,Walter Payton,John Riggins. Just to name a few.

8 men in the box and the Saints are lined up 5 wide with Drew getting rid of the ball in about 2 seconds. but yea the bears are going to SKULLfrick the saints.

Star athletes from the 80's would still be stars, if Ingram could win a heisman, I know Bo could or Walker would be heisman winners today. However I imagine that the average player would not be on the same level. I also imagine that Calvin Johnson would have a field day, but Modern d backs can't stop them either.

Peej honest question here. How do you hide Fencik from the Saints? If you let Marshall cover Graham you lose the Bears best pass rusher. If you let him cover Graham it's gash city. Fencik Wilson and Marshall are what made that defense, you know it but I know you'll argue Mike.

ETA:
Shaun Gayle isn't the answer either.
