And therein lies the rub. The expenses are ever growing (coaching salaries, recruiting budgets, facilities arms race etc) and demand to win from fans doesn't diminish even though they aren't showing up to watch. Basically the fans are saying spare no expense to win big...but don't charge ME for it.
But, they are charging me.
Through high cable TV fees, increased ad costs ( that get passed down as increased goods costs) ,etc

What are some things they can do to help attendance?
Reduce stadium capacity. Reduce prices (like concessions in Atlanta). Increase fan-friendly areas without removing views of the field (like the Miller Lite zones in Jerry World). Improve WiFi and other methods of live interaction. Speed up games (TV has killed the pace of play and overall length of time.).

Honest to God it would be to quit making the games last for 3 hours, limit the fricking tv timeouts, and stress to campus to make attendance easier
I don’t buy the argument of games in CFB lasting too long. If other factors were more enjoyable, the amount of time it takes to play one game would be irrelevant.
I used to enjoy that when a player went out of bounds the clock would actually stop as opposed to today with a momentary stop.

So you quit going to see the college team you presumable graduates from and enjoy watching play because of the weather? Seriously?
Weather is definitely a factor I take into consideration when thinking about going to a game.
I'm not going to sweat in the stands in 98 degree heat for an 11:00 kickoff against a cupcake, or sit through a monsoon against Arkansas, etc.

The issue is too much dead time due to commercial breaks. After several years of only watching big time cfb games and nfl games, I went back and watched a hs game, and I couldn’t believe how much better the game flowed without tv timeouts. It’s just a better experience. Tv timeouts suck the life and momentum out of games.

So many reasons why attendance has fallen. Games are too long. Too expensive. Poor officiating. Poor competition/not enough marquee matchups. Apathetic students/low T beta bitches don't attend games.
Once you get older, there's more shite going on in life that blocking out an entire Saturday for a game is more difficult. It's easier and more enjoyable to watch all the day's games at home on the big screen. I make it to two, maybe three home games nowadays and I do at least one away game every year. I don't have the motivation to go to more, I'd rather do yardwork and house projects.

Passing games are so prevalent in college football today that this would be absolutely miserable to sit through.

Comfier seats with leg room
Serve beer in the stadium
Have activities in the stadium for youth, like what MLB stadiums do
Better food
Lower prices

End neutral site games and end games against FCS schools would be a huge help

I did that in 2009. No regrets.

So did I. I don't think I would do it again.

There should be a rule that every p5 school be required to schedule no fewer than 10 games against p5 opponents, and be barred from scheduling fcs teams. In addition, I think a lot of fbs schools in the cusa, sunbelt, and mac need to be kicked back down to fcs

we've raised generations of front-runners.
lotsa of people are more attached to identifying with a champion than they are their own schools and local teams.

Does a typical fan want it to be an arms race? I know I don’t. Coaches are not worth what they are paid. It’s not that they don’t bring value, but when you have to raise booster funds for a buyout, then things were done incorrectly.
Look at the way athletes get to live compared to a regular student. It’s that way at ANY major, competitive university. The fact is, it shouldn’t be that way. Give them stipends for time they cannot work a job, and let them sell their own autographs or get paid to work a camp. But...they don’t need sleeping pods. They don’t need Chargers. They don’t need dozens of pairs of shoes.
I don’t want to pay for that type of arms race. It sucks that it is necessary to win in this era, and has thus watered down the field of true contenders. It’s also a systematic problem.

Fewer TV timeouts and max 1 minute.
No credit for non-Power 5 wins.

I am a UNC alum and football season ticket holder. A couple of years ago they decreased stadium capacity by ripping out the aluminum bleachers and putting in individual seats. They also started selling alcohol inside the stadium for the first time last year.
This is primarily why I think we're about to see a big trend in "non-blue blood" schools downsizing their capacity in favor of installing chairbacks, premium seating, and boxes.
Louisville had the right idea in installing all chairbacks instead of bleacher seating in Cardinal Stadium.

Is this adjusted for stadium capacity?
The big stadia are bigger now and I can also maybe guess that there are "minor" teams in FBS now who by definition won't have big crowds.
How is the data normalized?
