College football is so broken

No, it’s not. Look at the ratings.

It’s definitely broken.

Unfortunately, we all love it too much to quit it.

The only solution is to separate college football from the other college sports. The other college sports go back to the previous model. They get scholarships but can not get paid. Maybe provide for an NIL allowance of say $50,000/year but nothing else.

Reimplement transfer limits. If you transfer, you have to sit out a year, unless it's part of a coaching change. If your coach changes school, you can not transfer to that school unless you sit out a year. That way the coach can't simply raid the previous school and take their team with them.

Set up outside private companies for college football. The schools would license out their football programs to these private companies. The private companies would be run by boosters. So for example, LSU would license out the football team to LSU Football, LCC. These private companies would then be allowed to use the school logo, uniforms and colors and allowed to rent out (for little to nothing essentially) the stadiums for that school.

Doing this and splitting college football away from college sports as a whole saves college sports and let's college football be it's own entity. I think it's inevitable at this point.

I knew this would happen when people wanted a playoff and pay players. I’ve always said coaches should have a salary cap and the rest of the money should go to the academics. It’s a game. A great game that was turned into a business and ruined. Sad to see.

And the NCAA has only itself to blame. I mean we all saw it coming. The NCAA raking in money, sometimes making $1/billion a year. Schools selling jerseys and licensing out football games, raking in money. Eventually the players were going to want a part of that.

I mean it was so stupid that a kid on an academic scholarship could take an internship with a Company and be guaranteed (whether during school or after school) $50,000-$75,000/year to start, but yet a kid on an athletic scholarship couldn't even be taken out to dinner.

Blame the adults, they were the ones raking in the money and getting rich while doing none of the work. Blame the NCAA, which didn't let kids transfer schools, but let coaches take another job anytime they wanted to.

And I'm sorry, the playoff is still 100% better than what we had before. If it was the BCS, it would've been a boring Indiana-Ohio State rematch.

If it had been a 4 team playoff, you are looking at the same Indiana-Oregon beatdown that occurred in the semi-finals as well as most likely an Ohio State-Georgia match.

Miami, who beat Ohio State, and Ole Miss, who beat Georgia, wouldn't have had a chance.

My only thing with the playoff is just make it 16 and be done with it. I don't like the idea of making it 20 or 24. 16 keeps it at four rounds and eliminates the bye, which I support.

As for paying players, again NIL should be allowed. Players were being paid before, it was just under the table.

If you want, I would be okay with setting a limit. Say $1 million/year. But players absolutely should still be allowed to make money off NIL. If a college football game is using players name and likeness, those players should be getting royalty money off that game. If the University is selling a jersey or any type of merchandise referencing a player, that player should get royalty money off that.

It's a mess right now, but the old system was not better.

Maybe not football that much since, like you said, they largely outsource football. But annually the NCAA generate $1.4 billion in revenue. So yes they truly do print money.

You couldn't expect to see the NCAA be making money like that, and NCAA officials, school officials and coaches living like kings and queens, and not expect the players to not want a significant piece of that.
