The Redskins I get, that was the equivalent of calling a team the Chinks. The Indians - that's optics and capitualation.

Yea the name Cleveland has such a negative connotation. They should go with the Lakewood Indians.

I think the YANKEES should change their name as well. Yankee is a derogatory name for northerners. Those poor people north of the Mason Dixon line have been living with this filth for years!! End the horror!!

Explain how "Braves" is derogatory.

Organization has pretty much distanced from it (though we haven't had crowds at Truist Park due to COVID for it to be put into practice). Honestly, I'm not going to miss it as much as I thought I would.

Is this just another ploy to move the team? I don't think northern Ohioans are going to take to this very well.

Maybe. The Dolans have been terrible owners for years and support has been waning because of their unwillingness to spend money when the window is open to contend. They are going to trade Lindor, possibly the best Indians player in recent memory, and now they ditch the name. Good luck getting fans into the park.

What’s sad is this likely still won’t be enough for progressives. Give it a few years and they’ll be crying for the franchise to shut down for its “ties to oppression and racism”

LOL. Unlike the NFL, relocations are extremely rare in MLB. There's been one baseball relocation since 1972. They aren't going to relocate a baseball team that's been in the same city since 1901. Absolutely zero chance of it happening.

Bingo. "For decades, baseball in Cleveland turned a purposeful blind eye toward white supremacy, even outright celebrating it with the franchise name. That uncomfortable past can't be escaped... "

An Irish Catholic institution can't call themselves the Irish?

Honk honk.

Irish people either love ND, or hate ND, but still like the mascot.

There have been a number of serious threats to move. In fact, the Rays are in Tampa / St Pete specifically because MLB shitcanned an attempt by the Giants to move there.

I'd argue the Asian variety of Redskins would be the Chinamen.

Is this literally all USA Today does now? It's always them.

Because it has nothing to do with defending native Americans, it’s all about rebranding everything for China.
