On the streets outside of the arena in Shanghai, miniature flags are being handed out to fans attending Lakers/Nets. In a tense political climate an NBA game will be staged under approximately 18,000 Chinese flags.

That crowd isn’t going to be 18000 once the people who broke or threw away the flags end up in camps.

so they're handing out Chinese flags to the Chinese? This thread has no point.

The NBA has been using its policy on “no politics” to take signs about Hong Kong away and eject protesters.

I don’t see them enforcing that by taking away the flags from Chinese spectators.

It's an image problem for the NBA.

The whole pretense of power is the perception of reality.
Words.
Visuals.
Actions follow.

The communist leadership only want the power to control the people and take the money. Thieves.

Related - It has been declared that there will be no media access to players before or after the game.

NFL players - “I’m just here (press conference) not to get fined.”

NBA players - “I’m getting the frick out of here not to get disappeared.”

The fact that there are even NBA games being played in China doesn’t sit super well with me in all honesty

And that's where the problem begins with the NBA. Should they have been doing business with China in the first place? Should we expect American companies to be overwhelming moralists, or should they just be concerned with making money.

The problem is the NBA fancies itself as the vanguards of American morals as far as sports goes. Since that is there overarching ethos, they should have seen the hypocrisy with dealing with China.

Russillo was spot on with his take on the matter when bringing up the point that most of us use products from companies with unsavory business practices. The easiest example of this is Nike and its sweatshops.

If an NBA team handed out American flags there may actually be some kind of an uproar and apology from the league

how long has this policy existed? Surely didn't seem to be enforced during the "i cant breathe" fad.

No politics by the fans during the games.

The players, coaches, and front office people? That’s apparently different.
