Because the team wouldn’t own it. Simple as that.

Is the city in charge of upkeep on the field? That would explain why it is always in horrible condition.

I think that’s all the Bears.

Also, this is a good place to mention, as I always do, that Chicago took out $400 million in loans in 2001 to build the spaceship, have been paying on it for 24 years, but still owe about $550 million on it, because that’s the most Chicago thing ever

A Christmas Story (and the book upon which it was based) were set in Jean Sheperd's hometown of Hammond, IN. But I think Ralphie's old man hated the Bears and ridiculed the so-called monsters of the midway.

Hammond is immediately next to Gary.

Pretty sure it's not the Bears who owe $550 million, it's the City.

Yes, most Chicago thing ever.

Why is almost every major city so horribly run?

Pretty sure the Bears and NFL paid off their portions of the debt in 2002. It's the city that hasn't paid off theirs.

Chicago should call their bluff and let them relocate to Gary, IN.

Chicago isn't a terrible city at least the downtown part which has improved alot from what it was 20 years ago. Alot of areas in NW Indiana are far worse. I want them to stay in Chicago and the Bears are offering to pay for the stadium unlike most teams who want tax payers to foot the bill for new stadiums. Chicago needs to let the Bears built the stadium they want and suck it up.

I think I’d pick somewhere nicer than Gary, IN. Like Mogadishu maybe

do the Bears actually want to move to the north Chicago suburbs or do they want to stay downtown?

Because they would not control the land around the stadium and be able to develop it to make even more money.

Sure if you ignore the shitty parts and only focus on the high end suburbs that aren’t in the city limits.

Agree.

Bears should pick a destination that's at least somewhat believable.

FWIW, the Bears never said Gary, they said NW Indiana. Some people are just running with Gary for the jokes and it’s spreading like wildfire.

I’d still be stunned if they leave Illinois (I think the odds-on favorite is still the Arlington Heights site, followed by making it work in Chicago) but there are “feasible” (non-Gary) options in NW Indiana.
