If the NBA Finals on NBC was a thing this year, the ratings would have been better. There was no better set up, nothing more dramatic, nothing more intense than the buildup and intro to a regular season game, playoff game, Finals game on NBC.

My all time favorite NBA Finals was 2005 Spurs over Pistons in seven games. 2003-2006, the first four years of the NBA on ABC/ESPN were decent but fell off afterward.

The 2011 Finals: Mavs over Lebron was fun, as were the 2014 Finals: Heat over Spurs, and 2015 Finals: Spurs over Heat.

lack of parody

The NBA really needs to bring in Weird Al to fix this parody issue.

On a serious note. Not only have we not had repeat champions in the last 5 years. We haven't even had a team go to the finals 2 years in a row since the KD Warriors. The parity right now is probably the best it has ever been.

One, the NBA is about to sign a massive new TV deal, so the ratings must not be that awful

And pretty much everyone in media, sports, and business agrees that their contracts are massive overpays. Nielsen ratings are basically irrelevant these days but even their streaming numbers are thoroughly mediocre. They are comparable to the NHL in ratings and yet are asking to get paid MLB money.

Nielsen and Fox said Thursday the World Series averaged 9.11 million viewers, less than the 9.79 million average from the 2020 series, when the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Tampa Bay Rays in six games.

and with familiar personalities like charles barkley, lebron, steph, kd etc about to exit in a couple of years, the future looks really bleak for the NBA.

couldn't have happened to a better bunch

Could’ve fooled me, EURO 2024 has been a fantastic watch so far even with matches between Albania and Croatia.

I don't understand this. I never watched an NBA game and felt like they were pushing an agenda. If they have I guess I just didn't notice it.

I’m surprised it hit that many viewers… people don’t want to watch basketball in the middle of June… the playoffs are way way to stretched out…

The playoffs were fun this year and some great series....Mavs were fun to watch but they ran into a buzzsaw against the Celtics in the Finals. Finals sucked but playoffs were fun to watch.

Have to agree. Plenty of good basketball this postseason, especially in the western conference. Every team in the east was too banged up to have a chance of overcoming Boston, which sucked.

Doesn't matter. Most NBA fans are more interested in the TMZ aspects of the NBA (who's dissing who, who's banging which instawhore, Woj bombs, etc) than the actual game itself. There is no sports that gets more outsized coverage and hype relative to its actual viewership than the Association.

Are blowouts more common? I don't have the stats but it seems that way. Definitely seemed that way for nationally televised games during the season and folks turning off game after game early is a good way to degrade interest in the league.

That’s fine and dandy for parity. But how does that solve the NBA’s parody problem?
