Caleb Williams has the arm strength and the wheels

but doesn't seem to have the instincts to play QB.
Stepping out of bounds by accident was a WTF moment. So was getting called for grounding when he flung the ball after he tripped, which looked like it could have been a fumble and a Jameis-level embarrassing turnover.
Plus he reminds me of myself during the early nineties...usually high. The majority of his incompletions were feet over receiver's heads.
Maybe Ben Johnson can eventually make it work, he took the job to work with Caleb, but there's a shitload that needs to be corrected in Caleb's game and I'm skeptical that it's possible.

His arm strength is insane but he has absolutely zero touch or feel for when to take some off. He’s also wildly inaccurate.

I think he will end up being fine. The talent shows. He actually looked faster last night. His offensive line didn’t do him any favors.
Ben Johnson wasn’t going to sprinkle magic dust and make his issues disappear overnight.
He is a little too quick to bail on plays and that showed. He will inevitably get a better handle on Johnson’s system. He won’t ever be an elite QB but I think he will end up being serviceable because of his legs

That's a tale as long as time in the NFL.

His footwork and mannerisms in the pocket always appear so uneasy and frantic to me, especially when it starts to collapse a little. He just doesn’t look comfortable playing the position in the pocket at all

He looked more in control for exactly one drive, the first one. Even threw with a little bit of touch.
After that it was back to erratic scrambling and firing every pass as hard as he could.
Ben Johnson has his hands full for sure.

Mike Sando does his QB tiers list, I can't remember where Williams landed, but his list is built on input from people in the league. Just among that class of QB's (Daniels, Nix, Pennix), Williams was at the bottom of that list, and the one thing Sando said kept coming up was that Williams was really slow at processing the situation, or couldn't do it at all. It was pretty alarming for a QB that came in that highly regarded, and a lot of people aren't convinced that this will improve.

Yeah he looked fine on the scripted plays early on…but after that it was mostly bad. His short to intermediate throws just consistently look awful
Ben Johnson also made a really stupid decision early in the game going for that 4th down over taking the FG. Then later allowing them to get points before the half, it looked like the D didn’t believe Minnesota was actually going to try anything there
The OL is also still pretty awful and Flores is a really good DC so tough to put it all on Caleb

McCarthy looked better in the 4th quarter than Caleb did for most of last season.
When the dust settles, that QB class will probably be:
1. Daniels
2.Nix
3. Pennix
4. McCarthy
5. Maye
6. Williams

LGBTQB1 just needs to settle down. He will still be a great NFL QB. Social media just really rushes these guys, imagine if we had social media when Peyton Manning played his rookie season. Conservative play calling killed that game yesterday, though Caleb has to hit DJ for that deep td late in the game.

It’s like someone flipped a switch on him last night after he started 10/10.
Finished 11/25 after that

That was nearly 30 years ago. Things have changed dramatically since then. Rookie QBs come in the league more prepared than ever before whereas in 1997 it was expected rookie QBs would struggle...if even play at all in their first season. In the last nearly 10 years there aren't a lot of 1st round QBs who struggled early then suddenly became great. Improved? sure. But not All Pro caliber guys...which is what any franchise is hoping to get when they take a QB No.1 overall.

I’ve been saying this since his college days. He is soft as butter and is not leader material. He had some awful throws last night.

He looked like early on pat mahommes that first drive. He’ll be okay as the season goes on, second new offense in two years + Vikings defense are no joke

Weird seeing Merrill Hoge without a necktie knot the size of a grapefruit.

It was the throws that he didn’t make that were worse to me. There were quite a few plays that he either didn’t see, saw too late, or bailed on before it developed fully even if he wasn’t rushed.

He’s a bigger gayer version of Kyler Murray.
