Caught the HP umpire coming out of the locker room. He was in on the meeting and said Aiken told his manager it was "tightness" in his arm.

It's a post-graduate program. From their site:

quote:

The IMG Academy Post-Graduate Program is a unique and exciting opportunity for motivated students who wish to enhance their academic profile for possible future enrollment in an elite university. Student-athletes spend a year between graduation and college strengthening their transcripts with either Advanced Placement or college courses, as well as preparing for SAT/ACT testing and participating in their chosen sport program. All post-graduate students are required to participate in our College Planning Seminar to guide students through the admissions & recruitment process.

Astros were stupid to draft him if he had visions of going to an elite university.

That being said I am glad they didn't sign him.

He didnt. But teams can't look at these kids medical records before they draft them. Astros found something with his elbow and lowered the offer. Agent was insulted and told family and media that since he's throwing off the mound in practice, it meant the Astros were lying and were just being cheap.

Hate it for him but if it's a significant injury, it sure paints the Astros in a better light.

Problem is, as many people were there writing about how awful the Astros were in this whole ordeal, hardly anyone will mention this.

The problem is teams aren't allow to do physicals on kids they are about to make a huge investment on until after the draft. Aiken never wanted to go to college and the Astros were going to pay him like a 1-1 until the MRI showed potential issues with his elbow ligament. The Astros then lowered their offer significamtly.

As a fan I never understood that. I think if they felt strongly enough about the elbow being an issue at all they should have just pulled any offer period instead of offering him 4 or mill.

Wouldn't this year's 1.2 have been forfeited if an official offer wasn't made?

Somehow this is all the Astros fault.

Oh yah I forgot they do have to offer a certain level of money to not lose the next year's 1.2...I think that number was 3.2m.

They have to offer a percentage of the slot value in order to have the pick 'protected' for next year.

ETA- Didn't keep reading. I'm quite late to this party.

I was wondering this as well. All I remember about this situation was he costing the astros marshall and another guy.

I never wish a kid to have a serious injury. But this definitely makes the Astros look smart after all the national writers destroyed them for not signing him.
