Be careful of how you judge people on your individual experiences. I laughed at Bill commentating ball games quite often, and thought that he was high most of the time. He may have been, but he was a genuinely good guy, it seems.

I always enjoyed his games as color guy. I was a fan. Miss the big lug.
Funny you posted this. I was just thinking about Bill the other night listening to awful color commentary.

Weren't there stories of him being kind of a no-show dad at times?

Depends on what stage of his life

My favorite thing about the guy was John Wooden, who was a notorious hard arse, would let Walton travel in the summers with the dead while making all other ucla players stay behind and train.
Shows both the talent and character of Walton.

I played ball with a guy who was a guard on Woodens last championship team along with Walton. Said the 1st official day of practice was also picture day. Walton shows up 1/2 hour late, hair down to the middle of his back. That was a no no at that time. Wooden told don't come back til you cut that hair.
Practice was the next day.

He called a game that his son Adam played in while at LSU. He laughed at Adam’s performance and was very critical of him. It was hilarious.

I had no idea Bill Walton's older son played at LSU. 95-97.

After the Soviet Union broke up, newly independent Lithuania didn't have enough money to send its basketball team to the Olympics. Walton convinced the Grateful Dead to sponsor the team.
OTOH He was also close friends with Jack Scott, who was an SLA sympathizer and who helped Patty Hearst during the time she was a fugitive. Walton was questioned by the FBI and there's no indication he actively aided the SLA, but he was at least adjacent, if not sympathetic, to them.
