Big 10 Commish Jim Delany on whether he regrets adding Maryland and Rutgers. “I wouldn’t put Maryland and Rutgers in the same [competitive] category.” He cites Maryland’s 30 conference championships in five different sports.

The only reason Rutgers is given the time of day is because they were among the first two teams to ever play a football game.

Kick out Rutgers.

Add Notre Dame to the West, move some crappy West team to the East for better balance.

Notre Dame and the BigTen can afford to get out of their ACC "membership".

It's true, though. I wouldn't put them in the same category, either, even if Maryland has had a rough go of it in football so far.

Maryland has a legit fanbase, a good history in both sports, has been in a power conference for forever, and has a pretty good athletic department top to bottom.

Rutgers has been shite since like forever and brings nothing to the table except a TV market.

Wasn't one of the reasons Rutgers and Maryland got added -- other than the Baltimore and Jersey TV markets -- was that they would be easy wins for a Penn State program weakened by Sandusky-related penalties?

Maryland wasn't added for the Baltimore market which is pretty damn small

they were added for the DC market, Baltimore is just an extra

UMD is way closer to DC than Bmore

Rutgers was added for the NYC market that has NJ in it.

I would agree. Rutgers hasn't added anything to the conference when it come to athletics. At least Maryland is good in basketball

Delany isn't wrong, but he orchestrated this mess.

I actually give him a little credit for not offering a general response about all the positives each school brings to the conference. In a roundabout way, he basically admitted that he might regret one of them.

Rutgers was added as a transparent attempt to get the Big Ten bigger into the NY/NJ tv markets.

Maryland football has been decidedly mediocre though it did give the conference a black eye with its off-field issues. But Maryland has done what it promised: its one three national titles since joining the Big Ten, given the conference another tourney team in hoops, and allowed them to add lacrosse as a sponsored sport (with the addition of Johns Hopkins in lax only).

The fact you can even point to positive things about Maryland since joining sets them apart from Rutgers.

All conference expansion is about adding TV markets. There wasn’t anything secret about it. It’s why the SEC added Missouri for St Louis and Kansas City.

This. It's clearly not about improving competitive play or fan experience. Scheduling with 14 teams is a nightmare compared to 12.

12 is the perfect number, imo. If it were up to me (and it's not), we would 6 12 team conferences in FBS and 6 playoff spots.

I respect Delany for making Big 10 schools play 10 Power 5 games (9 league, 1 OOC) even though none of the schools wanted to do it. It's too bad our pussy SEC commissioner wasn't man enough to do the same.

but then Notre Dame wouldn't get to cherry pick their ACC opponents anymore and Brian Kelly would cry that this schedule is really really difficult

I'm pretty disappointed that I've never thought of that one before.

It's only partially about athletics and academics, and largely about cold hard cash. To that end the member institutions are making more than they ever were. So i say, whatever, I'll deal. Notre Dame would've been ideal but they don't bring a new state and they weren't willing to give up their independent status in football. ACC lets them do that.

I think I've read that's it's not so much eyeballs in big metro areas, but the B1G can charge a higher subscriber fee when a team is in that state. That's part of the reason NC and UVA would be huge.

Rutgers mainly sucks, but I don't mind adding a bodybag program. You don't need a streetfight every week.

yes. all of this happened at literally the perfect time cause if it happened two or three years later, none of those in market subscription fees would work with the cord cutting. its why all of these conference networks are going to die in the mid 2020s
