I get called names when I share my thoughts on this topic, but I am not convinced that a crappy NFL team would blow out a really good college team.

I guess it depends on how you frame the question, for example...

Can the college team use all 100+ players?

Which set of hash marks is used?

Are the pro rules around tackling, hitting the QB, etc. enforced?

The two games are actually somewhat different, and people forget just how disorganized and lazy a bad NFL team can be. I would encourage people who think I am an idiot at this point to consider the 1998 Saints specifically.

The UCLA team that lost to South Carolina in the College World Series had Gerrit Cole and Trevor Bauer on their pitching staff. They definitely would have been able to compete against a 105 loss Pirates team that had Ross Ohlendorf and Paul Maholm anchoring their rotation.

The Chicago Charities College All-Star Game was a preseason American football game played from 1934 to 1976 between the National Football League (NFL) champions and a team of star college seniors from the previous year. It was also known as the College All-Star Football Classic.[1]

The game was contested annually—except for 1974, due to that year's NFL strike—and was played in July, August, or September. In the 42 College All-Star Games, the defending pro champions won 31, the All-Stars won nine, and two were ties, giving the collegians a .238 winning percentage.

These were interesting games back in the day.

NBA teams trying to tank late in the season are even worse

I remember the 98 Saints… they were 6-10 but were still playing meaningful games in December. You’re thinking of the 1999 Saints… they were truly awful

I thought we stood no chance in a 3-game series with them, but most Gamecocks were happy we swept Coastal in the Supers and then beat Clemson two straight to get to the championship series. But Blake Cooper pitched the game of his life in the first game and Roth pitched a gem in the second. Oddly enough, next year's team, the team that went undefeated in the 2011 Regionals, Super Regionals and CWS, lost a midweek game to Francis Marion University, a D-II school in Florence, SC.

An annual College All-Star vs NFL Game was held from 1934-1976. NFL was 31-9-2, but the last college win was in 1963 against the Packers.

Trenches.

That's it. Everything else you think doesn't matter. The game ends there.

Yeah, you're right. 1998 was actually not bad. I remember going to that home game against the Rams.

I think one major issue is the difference in practice time.

A great college baseball or basketball team could beat a bad pro team. It’s unlikely, but those are sports where a team can get hot and win a game. It might be 1 out of 10, but there’s that chance.
There is zero chance a college football or hockey team could beat a pro team.

The trailblazers and pistons at the end of last season were awful. UConn might have actually beat them in 7 game series. The 1 out of 10 I’m talking about is a healthy bad basketball team.

That 2015? UK team that went 38-1 would have had a chance to beat the worst team in the league that year.

They had a metric frick ton of NBA players.

Devin Booker
Karl Anthony Towns
Willie Caulie Stein
Trey Lyles
Harrison Twins

Blazers team with Dame, Jerami Grant, Anfernee Simons etc. would beat UConn by 40 every night they played. Pistons would smack them too. UConn wasn’t stacked like that.

Some of you have never played vs any NBA players. How many clean shots you think a college team is getting in the half court? Complete bloodbath

The more physical contact/force is involved in the game as opposed to skill, the further apart the teams. Some college WR’s and DB’s MIGHT be able to compete, but nfl offensive and defensive linemen will absolutely work college players.

This gets hinted at all the time in these discussions (Re: Bama vs Cleveland), but never outright said.

Even the worst NFL team is composed of 53 men that are at the pinnacle level of football. No college team is ever going to be composed of that kind of talent.

2019 LSU might be the closest thing to an NFL Team in that they eventually had 30 players drafted. A total of 38 out of the 53 that played in the National Championship participated in mini camps in 2022 according to Jeff Duncan.

And there's still no guarantee that 2019 LSU could beat the worst NFL team. Would they have better players at certain positions? Sure. But the physicality is huge here. How many times do we hear about guys putting on weight when they get to the NFL? That's not fat--it's muscle.

NFL guys are just stronger and faster, even on the worst team. The only reason a 2019 LSU would have a chance against a 2023 Carolina is coaching schemes and game plan.
