settle an argument at work, what do you do:
jr high, down 2 with the ball, 40 seconds left (no shot clock)
1. attempt to score as quick as possible
2. hold the ball for the last shot

I would run the offense and get the best shot possible regardless of the time on the clock.
You never wait for the last shot when you are losing... at any level. Getting the points is the most important thing.

If you were on defense in this scenario - What would you do ?

I run the play with my best player as I normally would, ideally getting a shot off with 15-20 seconds left. If I don't score I want time to foul and get the ball back and have another chance.

Either team have starters fouled out? Games been close all along or is one team in the midst of a run?
Without knowing anything else, I'd say 2, but there are other determining factors that we don't know.

If you're not in the bonus, get a good look within the framework of the offense. If you're in the bonus, try to get your best player driving to the rack

You setup your offense or a play and look for the best shot possible. You don't want to force a shot right away just to get a shot up, but I am not a fan of waiting until the last shot.
If you wait for the last shot, you are only giving yourself one chance to tie or win. If you shoot with say 20-25 seconds left, and miss, you can still go for a steal and then foul if unsuccessful which extends the game and gives you more opportunities to catch up.
Now if it is a tie game with 40 seconds left, you definitely hold for the last shot.

I'd say if you get a really good shot, take it. If not, keep looking for one till there is under 10 seconds.
40 seconds left is like maybe 1:05 at a nightclub where the place closes at 2:00. You don't want to settle for anything but you maybe have backed off finding the perfect 10.

Down 2? You try to score as fast as possible. If you miss, just keep extending the game

not that option

The answer given those two options is not 2.. although 1 isn't the best answer either. You run your offense and get the best shot you can get.
Personally, I would want to get the shot off with no less than 10 seconds left. That way if you miss, you can foul immediately and hope he misses a free throw.

personally, I would run the offense and try to score. At least if you miss, you can start fouling and try to draw the game out.

At that level just run your offense and try to get a good shot. I'd have faith that we could keep a team from scoring again on the other end.

link?
I did a little research to find a source that showed that through statistical analysis. The only source I could find was Primetime's arse.

I would think you'd definitely go option 1. Maybe not "as quick as possible", but definitely try to score. Why put all the pressure on your team?
If you go option 1, you either tie the game and put all the pressure on the other team to win, or if you miss you at least have plenty of time to foul or get a stop and score again.

I mean he is right. If you are trailing and get a good shot, you take it.
