AWFUL job by the officials tonight

It was a tense game, which is what you want as a neutral fan, but the officiating was terrible and impacted the game.
In the first half they call nothing. They let both teams play physical, the teams play to how the game is being called.
Then, like clockwork, the officials completely flip the way they are calling the game in the second half. First it starts with a rash of bad calls against Florida. You could see the technical foul on the Florida bench building from a mile away. The poor officiating allows Houston to get a big lead.
Then, as if the officials said they had to balance things out, Houston gets a rash of bad calls to allow Florida to come back. Suddenly, a game that had 4 total fouls in the first half has 26 fouls in the second half.
That inconsistency makes it difficult for either team to figure out how to play and made for the sloppy, albeit tense, ending stretch. Two technical fouls because of frustration with the officiating tells you how shitty they were. It’s one thing to have to adjust to the opponent. It’s another to have to adjust to the officials. It’s a huge problem in college basketball.
All teams can ever ask for from the refs is consistency. Tonight was anything but. It made for an ugly game. and the officials should be embarrassed they decided to assert themselves

I agree. It seemed like they changed the momentum for Houston first and then changed it for Florida as a make up.

Not sure that I have ever seen a team unintentionally get 3 fouls in 9 seconds.

The game was insanely physical in the first half. Felt like the refs needed to get in under control a bit but yes it did seem a tad excessive the other way in the 2H.

A 26 to 4 discrepancy is more than a “tad” excessive. You can’t condition the players that certain things aren’t going to be called fouls…then completely flip on them. Both runs, by each team, were directly fueled by the awful officiating.
That shouldn’t happen in any game. Especially the championship game.

Didn’t realize the number got to 26. Sitting in the Dome it went from an entertaining game with nice flow to just hot garbage. After 2 incredible semis, it was a tad disappointing.
When UF picked up a foul like 10-20 seconds into the 2nd half, it was clear what was about to happen.

Great observation, I said the same thing to a friend halfway through the Second Half. College officiating in every sport is brutal.

The referees were the sole reason we had Houston in the finals. Duke was manhandled and got no calls.
It’s in the professional ranks and now it’s widespread in college sports at an elite level.
To what extent is it influenced by sports betting?

There are very few sporting events I watch anymore, especially if LSU sucks. I always watch the NCAA Men's final. Being a huge ref hater, I could not agree with the OP more. That game sucked and sucked hard due to the officials deciding to completely change the way they called the game. When they called Houston for three fouls in 9 seconds, I turned it off.
Once again officiating, in any sport, makes it unwatchable. Officials clearly have something personal at stake here to just completely change the flow of the game. It is too obvious sometimes, and this was one of those times.

Contact down low went from not being called at all to being called off the ball on every bump.
Refs were pretty bad in every game i watched this tourney.

Yep. OP is spot on. Terrible disservice to the players and fans for the refs fo be so inconsistent.

Officiating with almost all sports at all truly competitive levels (nobody should care about little league through 4a HS officiating) is at an all time low. Part of it is the frankly insane standards we put on these officials, but the other part is officials at the high end college and pro level get compensated damn well to suck at their jobs.
To me it's stupid or liar. The leagues know the officiating is trash, yet they do nothing about it, so I keep coming to liar.

College basketball has a massive officiating problem. Crews shouldn’t get to subjectively determine how much contact is a foul, the rules should do that and any crew not capable of identifying and calling fouls based on that criteria should be bumped down or out.
It’s like showboat umpires in baseball making up strike zones arbitrarily. That’s not what you’re there to do and if you try it you should face consequences or termination.

I saw the practice footage of them going after loose balls and that looked more like Dagestani basketball than college basketball.
Some teams choose to just make the game football on hardwood. The discrepency in officiating is what allows that.
The reviewing of so many plays for F1 is also a terrible momentum killer.

Can’t disagree, BUT when the same crew calls completely different games from one half to the next, it isn’t just sucking. Averaging almost 1.3 fouls l per minute in the second half creates a game with no flow for either team and a bad viewing experience. It definitely leaves chance for a whole lot of ads though.

Correct.
I love Houston, but they foul nearly every time down the court. It's the old "they can't call them all" philosophy. They let them play too much in the first half. It was extremely physical.

This, like all business, is influenced by money. PERIOD. Gambling, TV revenue, etc.
You think it was just a coincidence that Houston made it to the Final Four in San Antonio?
Do you think it was coincidence that all four times LSU made it to the national championship game, they were all played in New Orleans?

This happens constantly in college basketball and it infuriates me. Completely ruins the flow of the game.
