Are we really surprised by the NIT opt-outs?

This is college sports 2024. If you ain't playing for a natty, it doesn't matter.

Players want to hit the transfer portal. Coaches want to get going with recruiting, especially as players hit the transfer portal.

Playing an additional game or three isn't worth it to anyone, sadly.

The only reason, I believe, team opt outs hasn't hit bowl season yet, is because of the extra bowl practices that a team gets. If not for that, you would be seeing teams opt out of smaller bowls as well. ESPECIALLY with the advent of the 12/14 team playoff.

The only reason it hasn’t happened in college football is because the conferences have multi-million dollar tie-ins with the bowls. The schools get about $5,000 per game as a payout for playing in the NIT.

The only reason it hasn’t happened in football is because the rosters are huge. Basketball teams don’t have that luxury…

NIT declines have been going on for decades now

UNC did it last year but none of the talking heads bitched because they were fine with them thinking they're above the NIT.

I declined the NIT.

Told them I was fat and white. Also I'm 42.

The "team" has to show up by contract... The players don't... See Georgia playing FSU's waterboys.

Exactly. It's just easier to make NIL/Transfer Portal a scapegoat now.

LSU opted out of NIT in 2016 after failing to make NCAA tournament with Ben Simmons.

My idea… for every point you lose by, you get 1% deducted from the check they give you afterwards

Lose by 1? Great game, here’s your fee

Lose by 70? GTFO and don’t come back

Coach: hey AD, do I get paid more to coach the NIT.
AD: no, why?
Coach to Media: “we will not be participating in the NIT, we hold ourselves to a hire standard”

Its a tournament for losers

If you believe you are a good basketball program, especially if you thought you were getting into the NCAA, its a huge letdown to play in the NIT.

For fans and players.

Its no different than a boxer taking a dive in the 1st round. If you're not bringing your team, you ain't getting paid...there have been boxers whose purse was withheld because they didn't do jack shite in the ring.

I am surprised at SJU. They would've won the NIT if they had participated.

This is inherently flawed for college sports because the vast majority of programs are never going to play for a national title.

And I don’t just mean mid-majors. It’s unrealistic for most power conference programs to ever expect a national title.

Are those venues devoid of any fans? I would think they wouldn't be too full.

Shocked interest has waned for a tournament is comprised of the left overs from a tournament that includes 68 teams.
