Well Penny did star in a movie about recruiting top basketball players

How many scholarship spots do they have? No way they have enough to sign 8 players

They got rid of the ability to cast off these guys at one point.
They instituted a “5 and 8” rule of 5 players per year and 8 over a 2 year period because one particular coach (Tim Floyd or Larry Eustachy IIRC) kept doing exactly what you suggested.

Isn't Memphis the second team that Calipari put on probation. Maybe the boosters have learned better ways to hide the "strong offers".

The first batch of players contains entirely Memphis area players but the remaining guys are from Long Island (Quinones), the Bronx (Achiuwa), Dallas (Hampton), and San Diego (Ellis).
I think they will get Achiuwa and one of the three guards, but still, I have to question any advisor who thinks a top 20 recruit is best served at Memphis.

This guy would be an LSU/TD legend with that name.

Hardaway (aside from being a Memphis legend and former NBA star) was well connected in the Memphis HS ans AAU scene. He was brought in for ONE reason, to sign the Memphis hometown talent. He is doing just that.
Truth. The money isn't from a school, it's the AAU system and the school has to be tied to the right people.
Penny has the right ties in the AAU system. This class is a reflection of that. We'll see if he can coach them and maintain those ties.

Memphis is an interesting area
Locals don’t give a frick about UM, as they went to ole miss, or Tennessee, or Alabama etc etc. However, they support Memphis basketball. A lot of money willing to be spent on that program. Penny got them bank rolling again

This class will have Memphis back at the top in a year or two.
Umm...try next year. Doesn't take long to turn around a bball team when you get players of this caliber.

Fed Ex did the same for Cal

Currently they have signed 4 top players.
James Wiseman - 5 Star #1 Center
DJ Jeffries - 4 Star #9 PF
Malcolm Dandridge - 4 Star #22 Center
Damion Baugh - 4 Star #20 Combo Gaurd
They will probably land the below players before signing day...
RJ Hampton - 5 Star #2 Combo Guard
Precious Achiuwa - 5 Star #4 SF
Lester Quinones - 4 Star #8 SG
Boogie Ellis - 4 Star #6 Combo Guard
Completely legit. No payouts to any of those players.

Their fans suck. They were douche bags during the liberty bowl a few years back. I guess they were butthurt they won 10 and had to play in their own stadium against Iowa State. The crowd was at least 60/40 iowa state too if not 70-75.

Their fans suck.
For basketball, the entire city supports them and is filled with grads from various SEC schools
SIdenote, how did you become an Iowa st fan?

BIL played there. We chased him around the country going to games. Good people in Iowa.

Penny ran an AAU team in the area and was pretty much hired to try and bring all these guys to Memphis.
Memphis basketball is a fricking phenomenon. People don’t realize how crazy people are about it. You hear about Kansas and Kentucky and duke...you go somewhere in Memphis and the basketball game comes on, they don’t change one or two tvs, you aren’t going to watch anything else.

Iowa State tailgating is on par with LSU minus the food. Those people are loyal and party.

That’s pretty wild.
Is that because historically most those sec schools basketball teams suck?

You can really say that about a lot of mediocre college football fan bases with nothing else in their states
Example: South Carolina
