That’s pretty wild.
Is that because historically most those sec schools basketball teams suck?
People from Memphis love their city with a passion. Much like Nola people. Its an old city with culture that gets shite on by others in the state, so they take extreme pride in it
Historically, there was no other team in the city to really support from a pro standpoint, so they rallied around Memphis basketball. Now, like I said, most of these locals will end up going to Ole Miss or Bama or UT, but they stay huge fans of Memphis basketball
It also doesnt hurt they have had awesome arenas to play in starting at the Pyramid and now at the Fed Ex Forum

Well, Penny will never miss a recruit from Memphis. He's a god there.
And he's a huge AAU presence.
And the out of state kids who are highly rated want to play for young, black NBA legend they can relate to and that they think can teach them how to get to the league.
Everyone knew this would happen when he was hired. Now lets see how good of a coach he actually is.

You misspelled Derrick Rose. Unless you are one of those people who conclude that Calipari must have been involved in getting someone to take his SAT in high school long before he ever committed to Memphis.

All you have to do is keep the Memphis kids in Memphis & you’ll roll everyone.

And Penny won't ever lose a single one I don't think.
He is a deity in that city to the black population.

I guess they are going to Memphis to learn the fine art of flopping from Penny

I brought this up on the recruiting board a while back. He coached AAU ball for a while and is deeply connected all over the country. As far as payments goes. He is a multi, multi millionaire and so is his assistant coach that played in the NBA and won a couple championships, Mike Miller. Money can come out of either of their pockets no problem. Hell they probably have a higher net worth than the memphis athletic foundation.

Are you stupid enough to think that Penny and Miller are personally paying recruits out of their own pockets?

I mean, you spent your two years here in Collierville, so I can understand your ignorance of the area.

True, our baseball program sucks.
Did you know most college programs have very poor baseball support?

No, i'm just pointing out there is plenty of money that will go to support basketball even if it did have to come out their own pocket but it won't. Regardless they could set up blind trusts and have trustees pay them. NCAA can't look at that. They don't have subpoena power. Getting players paid is the easy part. Having the circle of trust to keep you "out of the loop and keep mouths shut" is the difficult part

I don't know if these recruits are getting paid or not. Cynically I suspect they are in some fashion.
But I know if I'm some big state school with some no-name HC, like Wade, I'm paying my players because I have to.
Penny has pull with kids these days.

Don't forget former NBA player and head coach Sam Mitchell is on Memphis' staff too. He and Tony Madlock provide the seasoned basketball knowledge while Penny and Mike Miller are the more known former players who can recruit while getting some basketball coaching seasoning.

Exactly. Penny is still a huge NBA legend and his sneakers are still very popular. I'm sure there's some money flowing but kids will want to play for Penny before all but any college coach save for Calipari, Coach K, Roy Williams, and Jay Wright. Coach K and Roy Williams have a proven track record but Penny with his NBA staff, a young staff driving Rolls Royces and Bentleys have a cache that no coach in college basketball can match.
