I knew LSU WR Terrence Toliver and OL Peter Dyakowski (LSU graduate who was crowned "The Smartest Man in Canada") played there in the 2010's because I watched them on ESPN2 & CBS Sports Network, and followed them on X.

Looked it up & these LSU guys played there too.

You'll have a good time. Calgary is a great town.

When I was a kid, my dad took me to Calgary Stampeders games. They were awful at the time. Doug Flutie joined the team in '92 and turned them around winning the Grey Cup.

Years ago, the CFL had two teams called the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Ottawa Rough Riders. Martin Short had a joke that went....

"When you listen to the radio in Canada, they give the CFL scores and say 'Tonight, it was the Roughriders over the Rough Riders 24 to 16'. And you always know who they're talking about".

So, I just got back from the trip, wanted to share a few photos and observations. One-- they like to tailgate:

This was in inside of the stadium after kickoff:

Not very crowded for a home opener. The stadium and crowd experience felt a lot like a FCS/"Division II" college football game or a really large high school game. Capacity is only about 35,000. It was quite chilly, which may have kept folks away.

I sat in front of (and made friends with) a group of season ticket holders; they were rather rowdy and fun (every kick by the opposition, they would chant out loudly, SHANK! SHANK! SHANK!). They were very nice to me and quite welcoming.


The changes from American football were interesting. Endzones appeared to be HUGE. Blew my mind to see 10, 20, 30, 40 and then 50 TWICE, with the midfield being marked with CL for "centre line". It was weird seeing alternate spellings on the scoreboard like "defence" and "offence". and the game rules were a little odd. I didn't realize near the end of each half, the clock stops after EVERY PLAY. Also, on a missed field goal by the Stampeders, a Winnipeg player caught it in the end zone and ran it out so as to prevent a rouge.

Until I saw a couple of small groups of black teenagers while wandering around at halftime, I was convinced there were more black folks on the field than in the stands and concourses. It probably still was pretty close.

Oh, and at halftime, folks can get a handstamp to leave the stadium and then return; I think about HALF of the stadium did that and went outside to have a smoke.

Those games are very spirited. I enjoy them.
