This entire ordeal has been completely overblown. He’s a grown adult that plays a game for a living and had a heart attack and now he’s okay. Unless you knew him personally, then this shouldn’t matter to you at all. I’m told we should also be kissing Dan Orlovsky’s feet for being brave enough to say a prayer on live TV as well. While we’re at it, let’s rename the book of Psalms to “Dan Orlovsky.” Maybe we can all get a day off of work every January 2nd for Damar Hamlin day as well.

He didn’t have a heart attack, his heart stopped (cardiac arrest).

When it happens during a big game on Monday Night Football with millions of people watching, people are naturally going to be interested in how he is doing.

I understand why people are interested in this story. This man almost died. He is not completely out of the woods either.

Optics are important to the NFL brand. And now everyone is wondering if Buffalo can finally win a Super Bowl. This is comparable to a fictional Rocky Balboa story. Except Damar Hamlin is real ! No better story to drive the ratings of the NFL.

I have to agree with you. Im sure we will be unpopular in this opinion. The dude is a millionaire being paid to play a game. I wish him the best but what he has done is not heroic or extraordinary. Its just an opportunity for over paid shallow attention seekers to blow each other. Orlovsky is a perfect example and I consider him good at his job. Its really bizarre overall.

You're the only one bringing up Burrow in a Hamlin thread.

I’m glad that it looks like the guy is going to be okay, but the NFL and sports media has definitely capitalized on this opportunity to signal their virtue

Any time you have a teammate who either dies, or almost dies, it’s going to be a story.

They view it as their big chance to separate themselves from the other normal sports talking heads.

What would you have them do? Ignore it?

I'm sure they are going to highlight it all the way through the Super Bowl, especially if he makes a good recovery as a way to bolster the perception of the safety of the game; especially after the early season concussion issues.

Uh, how do you confuse Hamlin's life-threatening ordeal as people somehow painting him to be heroic or extraordinary?

That's like saying that baby Jessica who fell down a well was heroic or extraordinary.

Sometimes seeing a person suddenly at the doorstep of death fosters compassion and sympathy in others.

It's ok to reflect on our overall frailty as humans, too.

Episodes like this can be, as CS Lewis put it, God's megaphone to a deaf world.
