Plus overseas especially it’s not on “free TV,” over the air or cable, you have to do pay for view or subscriptions to get it in any kind of bulk. Which makes up for the ad revenue. Plus FIFA sells “advertising” in a hundred jillion other ways.

I hate commercials too but Americans have this expectation that sports especially big games be available on cable or over the air for no extra charge. That ship is fast sailing over the horizon.

“The Man” is going to get his money, the amount he wants, period. He’s not showing sports out of the goodness of his heart toward fans. That money is going to come from advertisers or it’s going to come from viewers. Take your choice.

Not really. What I meant by "free TV" is the expectation that most sports be included with the normal cable subscription.

Traditional cable TV unfortunately will be stone cold dead within a decade. It's on the critical list right now.

The Bama/Clemson game was the worst. They may have shown 45 seconds of game time between commercials before the half.

Let me start off by saying, I get it, without sponsors, we wouldn’t be able to watch sporting events from home. I understand the dynamic.

I think it’s just the amount of commercials that’s a big drag on watching games. You get a few minutes of action…commercial… a couple minutes later… another commercial. Rinse and repeat.

Not trying to bitch about something we have no control over. Just wish they could have more action and less ads.

ITS NOT JUST SPORTS

they do it with all movies now, a 90 minute movie in theaters, when its on TV, it now lasts 2 1/2 hours, and 2 hour movies now last 3 hrs because they add an extra hour of commercials to the movies

you get 10 minutes of movie, then 10 minutes of commercials, then repeat

I dont see why they cant do more short "in game" ads. Like a mini screen with an ad during :30 timeouts or whatever. Or kickoff transitions in football.

It’s gotten noticeably worse the past year or two.

What I can't understand is why the networks know that this is how the average person feels, yet won't make an easy change. Show less commercials but CHARGE MORE FOR THEM!
It's the same amount of money being made, but takes less time to show a game. Imagine how much enjoyable a football game NCAA or NFL would be by being completed in 2.5 hours. In the past I'd spend more time watching games, but now lose interest because of the length of games.
I know a lot of purists don't like the new time rules of MLB, but I'm back watching games again. I had quit with all of the 3 plus hour games.

A related issue to me is a local Birmingham radio show, now gone podcast route, is almost impossible to listen to due to the incredible amount of ads.
Maybe 30 minutes of real sports talk an hour.
The rest is straight up commercial breaks and their chatting about some sponsors.

Sure we do. The answer is to not watch. The TV networks won't change anything until customers change their viewing habits. We all lament the radical changes to college football too, but we still watch.

I stopped watching basketball because of the endings and time drain.

Also. I don’t think the leagues are completely void of blame as they allow this amount of stoppages for commercials.

In early days the NFL and college football would take the cash they could get to have the product on TV and it helped grow their product and support the league/business.

At this point does each SEC school really need $40m a year? Probably not. But the masses love the value of the SEC’s deal. Some cringed knowing what it would take to pay the bill.

Soccer has lower margins than American sports because of the TV deal values.

To broadcast F1 they have an amount threashold you want to breakaway for commercials.

I would love the SEC to put a lower cap on the amount of “tv timeouts” and take it to market. The offers would come in lower but could you grow the league and the tv audience to make up for that fact with fewer commercials, probably so.

I would watch all the MNF games if they were commercials free. Today I find myself changing the channel during a commercial and never coming back.

Because it's the same commercials all season. Pit Bull Dr. Pepper was the worst. One out of every five of the Fansville ads are good. But not 25 times in one game. I actually miss the JD Wentworth 87769 singing ads.

When LSU Baseball was playing RentAWin teams in their pre=conference schedule, they didn't have any ads between innings. They just showed kids and their parents, and hot chicks, in the stands every break.

It's awful. I wanted to throw my remote at the TV yesterday because they'll play for 2 min then timeout for a commercial.

2 min later and there's a foul and a timeout.

Guy rebounds a missed FT and is fouled in the process, let's go to another break.

It's fricking ridiculous.

I like to watch sports on replay and skip commercials or if it is live I mute the TV and read other scores and news
