It's a fun tournament and USA Baseball can't field a team of 120 guys. I don't knock them for wanting a part of it.

et dual citizenship if necessary. IDK it kind of defeats the purpose of having a team from Italy if most of their players are US citizens

Yeah, I get what you are saying. Maybe if your parents are from there I can even go that far but like you say - team Italy - the qualification was that you were of Italian descent on one parents side - no matter how many generations removed. That's really too much of a stretch for me.

Either play for the greatest country on earth or don't play at all

The ones playing for others most likely couldn't or didn't make the US team.

No one wants to watch the US, Japan, DR, Venezuela, Cuba, and Puerto Rico play a 6-team round robin every 3 years.

The Netherlands almost entirely made up of guys from Curacao and Aruba. Great Britain's whole infield is Bahamian. frick all that. If Puerto Rico is separate, Curacao should be separate.

This is actually due to various rules of the international sporting bodies. PR is grandfathered in to compete separately, for example. Aruba competes on its own most of the time at the Olympics, whereas Curacao does so in FIFA but nowhere else.

Its a function of when those territories gained their current political status and what the sporting rules were at that time.

The purest form of this event would be to emulate the 4 nations hockey thing and have US/Japan/DR/Venezuela do it in place of the all-star weekend.

That's not really the point though. The point is for MLB to try to create more fans across the globe.

why should non citizens get to play for other countries is my point?

because it's a meaningless exhibition tournament and as P pointed out, its goal is to grow the game

Half the Czech players came to the US to play in JUCOs anyway

I don’t get why colleges throwing money at internationals is a good thing. Certainly not good for developing local talent.

Good grief. This is really only an issue for Italy, Israel, and GB. Mexico could fill out a roster minus the 14 American born players, but they would lose some talent.

This is a way to GROW the game. These guys were not gonna make USA’s squad anyway.

Exactly. Four nations was great. But, MLB doesn’t want that. They want revenue growth. It might even be better for MLB if USA loses.

yep. and it has already proven way more successful than I wouldve imagined when they came up with it.

Who would have made the US team that was playing for another country?

Serious question.

For Italy in 2026, I can’t think of anyone.
