The NBA is on a constant trajectory down primarily because of the college NIL money. No one follows players in college anymore because they are rarely at a school for more than 1 year. Lack of emotional investment by fans in college players moving up means a significant drop off in new fans to the game.

This is absolute garbage. How the hell does this have so many upvotes?
How many players worth following from your school spent more than one year in college in the years preceding NIL?
What an awful take.

There is also a severe lack of role models playing on NBA teams.

Jesus Christ man.
Let's assume this is a thing people give a shite about, do you think players today are worse role models than players in the past?

It’s a build up effect that was predicted nearly 20 years ago. Yes former players were much better role models who were held much more accountable for their behaviors. To even suggest that Silver is comparable to Stern as a disciplinarian or someone who presented the NBA’s image for mass appeal is just completely wrong.

The fact that people might not know who SGA is is a failing of the league and tv networks.

They were due on national broadcasts 25 times, the Lakers were on 39.

Put the same teams on prime time regardless of if they are any good or not and wonder why the good teams aren't known.

This is wild because the ECF are setting ratings records and these playoffs as a whole have been the most watched in many years. I guess OKC-Minnesota isn’t the sexy matchup the average viewer wanted for this series.

You need a villain.. the Knicks series will get great viewer numbers because you have (1) a large crowd excited to see the Knicks do well and (2) a larger crowd who wants to see them lose because frick NYC

WCF is two teams nobody cares about (mostly because everyone was taught to ignore them by ESPN/ABC/TNT)

Its why I don’t watch it. I have accepted that all sports are fixed to an extent, but you can’t be so obvious about it or it’s no better than the WWE.

Baseball and football are reaching these levels as well.

that's probably part of it.

I'm sure shooting 700 3s per game, playing minimal defense, and allowing players to carry/travel/take 5 steps before shooting if they want also has something to do with it. It's simply a shell of the game many people in the 30-50 year old demographic grew up enjoying.

This thread is NOT the time to make that argument.

If the NBA was fixed, why would they ever let Minny and OKC destroy their ratings like this?

Why would they let the Knicks get exposed like this?

I don't think they are worse people but they are way more exposed now with social media.

Absolutely. OKC has been great to watch all year. NBA is far more worried about promoting the Lakers. If the ratings suck for the finals because of it, then the TV execs should remember it when contract negotiations come around.

You have to throw the small market teams a bone every once in a while, otherwise what's the point of having them in the league?

Also, we have no idea what sort of deals are being made behind the scenes.

When you have a terrible product, terrible ratings are inevitable. Its pretty simple. The league has bigger problems than what markets are in the finals, but it will give Silver an out to advertisers, etc.

Correct. TV and NBA pimped their aging stars over upcoming stars. Christmas Day games are their highest ratings games all reg season and OKC was not given a slot.

Thats missed exposure to casual fans who do watch on that day. And during the season OKC had few national games. Again, TV and NBA chose aging out stars over new ones.

Now in playoffs those aging stars are out and those casual fans must think its over.

The league and TV have no one to blame but their greedy selves. They chose instant money over long term money.

I’m a bit of an NBA hater, but worse rating in four years doesn’t make it historically low.

OKC should never had the NBA or any other major professional sport. Trailer park garbage.

Worst American city to have any major pro sports franchise. It's wild that Stern let a world class city like Seattle lose their team to a backwoods shite hole like OKC.
