All they really needed was the XP that was blocked.

Looking at the 49ers’ message boards, their fans are pretty much OK with this, with a lot of them saying it would’ve happened even if they’d won the big trophy and that they were surprised it didn’t happen during the season. Apparently it truly, legitimately was never a really good fit. Apparently it was so problematic that Shanahan had ordered him to the sideline from the press box a while back so he could keep tabs on him.

Did Steve Wilks coach at the college level? Hint one from a SEC team.

shite, all they had to do in the second half to win was run the ball and eat clock but the “gotta run muh offense” mentality took over. Shanahan Is 100% looking to pass the buck and it’s a terrible look on his part.

From listening to radio on reports out of San Fran. The players love Shanahan and did not like wilks. Some were not happy with the end of game calls. He had some rough calls at the end. But the defense was probably tired and they were t getting the pressure from the front 4 anymore. But that 5 across defense he had 10 yards back was bad. It made life easy for mahomes Shanahan saw that and got pissed when it was called and got the timeout.
No doubt shanahan blew the calls in the 3rd quarter. But he has done too much to get fired. He has taken teams to the Super Bowl with jimmy g and Purdy.

Numbers don’t tell the full story. They were pretty trash on defense against elite QB’s such as Burrow, Cousins, and Mahomes. He deserved to be fired midseason tbh.

He's fricking garbage
was at Missouri, and still is
ps, he's not a fit any where as a dcoord

Lol. They gave up 22 to Minnesota and lost because their offense couldn’t score. Cincy got them and scored 31, so did the ravens. In all their losses, the offense struggled to score points and landed at 17-20 points.
Against Mahomes, the D pitched a solid showing. His only regulation TD came off a gifted special teams blunder gifting KC the ball in the red zone. SF also missed an XP and their offense turned it over in scoring position. SF Defense gave them the ball in KC territory with a pick and SF got zero points.

I can't believe there are people sticking up for Wilks. He's terrible.
When he was at Mizzou as the DC a few years ago, he was seriously one of the worst DCs in the whole SEC. He shouldn't have been their DC to begin with.

The usual suspects on twitter are VERY VERY upset about this.
They are now gunning for Shanahan hard and I would wager there will be some serious animus to everything he does next year.

Please post some examples of the race baiters being mad. I need more entertainment today.

Shanahan needs some scrutiny as well and I hope he is harassed into retirement. Dude will never win a Super Bowl as a play caller.

Worth nothing here that Kyle Shanahan has now blown 3 double digit Super Bowl leads. Couldn’t win a game with his D yielding 19 regulation points, 7 of which his Special Teams gifted the opponent.

They gotta put the blame on someone or somebody, so, they chose this man, unfairly. This man had absolutely nothing to do with them losing that game, it's on Shanahan, but he's got to make someone the scapegoat to take the heat off of his butt. Wilks did a good job all season with that defense and had them playing solid ball all season defensively except for a couple of games. It's just wrong to can the man!SMH

He wasn’t the coaching failure in the Super Bowl, but he was destined to be an increasing liability going forward. Seeing as he has also clashed with Shanahan and players from the jump, it’s the right move
Putting the explicit criticism aside, Shanahan and Lynch told him coming in that they wanted to maintain the system that Saleh and Ryans built. On gameday Wilks deviated and deviated in bizarre ways. Shanahan’s biggest fault was offering a non-fit the job, not realizing it had to be corrected

Shanahan.
He’s a choker and needs a scapegoat. I wanted the 49ers to win, but the consolation was watching this wanker choke away another one.

From some reporting I found:
Shanahan and Wilks have butted heads philosophically all year long. At the root of Shanahan’s and Wilks’ disconnect was Wilks’ preference for 3-4 schemes though he was hired to operate Shanahan’s preferred wide-9 4-3 defense. Shanahan knew this when he hired Wilks, though. During a midseason losing streak, Wilks acknowledged the difficulty of operating an alternative scheme after doing his own thing for nearly two decades.
Wilks preferred to blitz at a significantly higher rate, which Shanahan called him out on during a Week 7 loss to the Vikings. Wilks’ zero blitz with 16 seconds left resulted in a last-second touchdown which drew Shanahan’s ire. That has been cited multiple times as a prime example of the divide.
Wilks preferred to call plays from the booth, unlike his predecessors, and was moved to the sidelines, but the run defense was his glaring chink in his armor after it plummeted from second in the league in 2022 to 26th. That same run defense was shellacked in the first half of their comeback NFC Championship win.

Boy, this is going to make anyone competent want to work for Shanahan moving forward

I’m sure turning over an objectively bad fit will be devastating for future recruiting. The SF DC to NFL HC streak also finally ending is brutal for him
Considering how bad the Niners’ defensive players are, it will be a really tough to find someone who wants to take on this project
