The San Francisco 49ers have fired defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, coach Kyle Shanahan announced Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Shanahan said he expected his coaching staff to stay largely intact but that conversations still had to take place in the coming weeks.

The 49ers hired Wilks before last season when DeMeco Ryans was hired by the Houston Texans as their head coach.

Shanahan told reporters that Wilks "just ended up being not the right fit."

Quick google search tells me they were:

8th in total defense
14th in pass defense
3rd in rush defense
3rd in scoring defense

So does someone within the organization just randomly hate this dude or something? Seems like he'll get a job pretty quickly with those numbers.

I'd say they still underperformed with the talent on that defense, but Kyle is probably just trying to shift some blame here. If they win the SB, Wilks still has his job today.

If Greenlaw doesn't get hurt and they don't muff a punt, they are super bowl champs and this guy is still considered one of the better DCs in the business.

I will say it seemed like Shanahan was yelling at him through the headset during the SB.

I guess they had their reasons but imo it was more their inability to score TD's when they were in the red zone that lost the game than it was the defense

I struggle to see what he did that was fire worthy. Seems like Kyle is blame shifting instead of owning the fact that he’s an all time choke artist. Wilks has to be one of the unluckiest coaches in the league between the 1 season at Arizona, not getting the Carolina job and then this.

Hufanga was a big loss. Greenlaw was a huge loss at the end. The only time the D really was bad was the Bengals games. Against the Ravens they got roughed up but Purdy was giving the game away.

kyle shanahan should be fired for not running CMC in the third on repeat. you want blame, there's your blame.

Wonder if he will sue them like he did when the Cardinals fired him.

I am sure there are narratives to explain it all.

Their defensive game plan in the superbowl was weird. They basically left all mid range throws wide open

Don’t use counting stats. 49ers were 26th in defensive rush EPA.

The Super Bowl was probably his best effort of the playoffs

He let Love and Goff almost bounce them as heavy favorites in the prior 2 rounds

Of course he does.

They held Mahomes and the Chiefs to 3 points at the half and 10 through 3 quarters. Is it Wilks's fault the offense couldn't score? The defense was also exhausted toward the end of the game. Romo and Nantz talked about it a couple times.

He was getting great pressure just rushing the front 4 and they were able to cover the first 3 quarters. Then all of a sudden in 4th quarter and OT he started blitzing the fricking house and mahomes burned them. Not sure why he got so agressive all of a sudden but it was dumb

Yeah, that's what the comment seems like to me. He wasn't a fit doesn't mean he wasn't a good DC, it means that he was an a-hole and they feel like they can get similar production from a non-a-hole.
