Maybe a stupid question, but why isn’t the 1 playing the 4 and the 2 the 3?

Not positive, but I think tennis draws are done in quarters. whereas NCAA has 4 #1 seeds who can’t play until the semis, tennis only has 1 top seed. So basically they divide all seeds into groups of 4 and then within each group it is random who ends up in which quarter (other than 1 and 2 in opposite halves). So the top 4 can play any of seeds 5-8 in quarters, any of 13-16 in RD 4, and any of 29-32 in RD 3.
Ends up working out the same way as NCAA tourney, we just don’t notice it because they don’t seed 1-68 (other than for play in games)

Is there really any reason that in 2026 the women are still playing 3 sets?

The TV networks hate 5 set matches.
If it was up to them, they'd move the men to best of 3. They've already moved Davis Cup and the year end finals to best of 3.
The womens year end final used to have a best of 5 final in the 80s and 90s.

I think Shelton has a better chance to win the final and you never know if he can make it back here. It’s been too long since an American man won a GS.

I can appreciate this line of thinking and agree with the premise that Shelton probably has better odds against the ball bouncer, but I gotta go with my heart. Pulling for Taifoe.
