Lucky for Mclaren they still got maximum points for the day.

On the other hand vcarb decided to pit ric on lap 7 after the soft runners pit while he was on medium strategy and handing Yuki his race.

Toro Rosso / AT / VCARB are very reliable at badly botching one or both drivers' strategies at many races each season. In this case, what they did to Danny was hilariously bad. First, they pitted him early on mediums to respond to Albon and KMag pitting on softs. Now for Albon and KMag, I get the strategy. At the start I think they both shot up four places past guys on mediums. Getting position, then doing two longish hard stints (possibly in clean air, being off-schedule with the medium runners) might have worked. But when the team told Danny to respond to those guys pitting, of course it didn't make sense. But once they did it, Danny would presumably then do two longish stints on hards.

Yuki remained on the conventional two-stop strategy for a while. After most of the other medium-starting two-stoppers did their first stop, Yuki stayed out for several more laps. I think when the team saw that his lap times were holding up, his engineer got on the radio and said "We are switching to Plan B, and it is going to work."

So this is the funny part. Yuki did 29 laps on mediums, then 41 laps on hards to finish the race. Danny did 7 laps on mediums, 21 laps on hards, and then did his second pit stop one lap before Yuki did his one and only pit stop. So Danny stopped twice and actually did 42 laps on hards to finish the race. Inexplicable.

The one-stop strategy worked perfectly for Yuki. In the last 10 laps, I was sure Alonso and Stroll were going to catch up and pass him. But Alonso caught up and then didn't have any extra juice (I mean grip) to get by him, so he let Stroll by (because Stroll had fresher tires and better pace than Alonso) to try to get by Yuki. Stroll tailgated him for several laps at the end but he also didn't have enough grip left to get by. If Yuki had done the perfect two-stop race, he would have finished behind both Aston Martins, so he ended up with a fantastic race.

Meanwhile, Danny Ric was steaming at the end, but very diplomatic on the radio...

In the WCC:
The only change is that McLaren has finally passed Ferrari for P2, with a very reasonable chance to surpass Red Bull before the end of the season if they don't do something about the Perez problem.

In the WDC:
It's Hamilton who has leapfrogged both Perez and Russell, up two places to P6. Perez drops one place to P7 and Russell drops one place to P8.

Yuki gained two points on Hulk to tie it up with 22 points each, but Hulk remains ahead in P11 because of his two P6 finishes. Yuki's best results are two P7 finishes.

In the Prediction Rankings:
We have a new leader! It's Pitt Road, rising from P3 to P1. sorantable has taken a dive from P4 to P8. Tornado Alley is up from P9 to P5.

No penalty for Verstappen. bullshite. Because Hamilton told the stewards it was a racing incident.

Hamilton very clearly steered right/moved towards Max under braking, even though Max came in too hot. They both had some fault.

Whatever F1 is doing to bring some semblance of parity back to the top of the grid, it's working. Thank you.

Piastri is the truth and the future of the sport.

Lando seems miserable. He was so likable when he was climbing to the top. Now that he’s pretty much there, he seems kind of joyless. He should enjoy the ride. Do the right thing and move on to the next race. I get he’s pissed, but be the bigger person. Be happier for your teammate who has had your back this year.

I think hamilton realizes that max is feeling the pressure now and cracking. Verstappen wrecking himself did more damage than any penalty could do at that point.

True. I don't fault Lando for anything today. Just a racer being a racer.

Only thing that McLaren cares about is the constructors chanmpionship. WDC is a personal award not a team award.

By this logic, they had the 1-2 secured, even after their own screw up, needlessly pitting Norris first. Yet they compound it more by essentially cutting their lead to max/hamilton in half (*10 sec down to 5 secs, bf max and Lewis touched wheels)

The team would’ve been better off acknowledging their screw up instead of spending 20 laps wagging their finger @ Norris.

Plus if they still waited two laps after bringing Lando in for Oscar, completely botched situation for the team.

If you're McLaren you have to do what you can to keep both drivers in the zone and pushing as hard as they can... I honestly hate what happened for both drivers, but if you're chasing the WCC, you gotta keep the momentum going, and who is 1 vs who is 2 is meaningless... the way it played out, it sucks for Lando, and it sucks for Oscar... but they got the 1-2 and that's what matters

I think the recognized Oscar deserved the win, but they fricked him by pitting Lando first....they're playing the team game and have conceded the WDC to Max... they're trying to be fair and that caused a lot of BS today

Time to move forward... happy for Oscar that he got a win, but not happy there is so much controversy around it

None of this happened in a vacuum.

The team has continued to make strategic errors, Norris has now has fumbled P1 on the start multiple times and Oscar is consistently slower than Lando when it counts.

The cars have gotten better and better but everything else has been far from optimal.

Every message as McLaren desperately pleaded with Lando Norris to obey team orders:

quote:

Lap 47:

Tom Stallard, race engineer to Oscar Piastri (TS): “OK Oscar, Lando has pitted to cover Hamilton to make sure he covers Hamilton. We’ll manage that situation, best pace from you now. Best pace.

“Best pace. Don’t worry about Lando.”

Lap 48:

Will Joseph, race engineer to Lando Norris (WJ):

“OK Lando, Oscar has just pitted. He’ll likely come out just behind you. We’d likely to re-establish the order, at your convenience.”

Lap 49:

WJ: “Lando, still 21 laps after this one. You do have the current fastest lap, look after the tyres.”

Lap 51:

TS: OK Oscar, so, once you get to Lando, we’ll swap positions. We’ll swap position, but we want to avoid Lando having to give up a lot of race time.”

Lap 53:

WJ: “And Lando, radio check, please.

LN: “Yes, loud and clear.”

WJ: “OK, save the tyres at Turn 4 and Turn 11, please.”

Lap 56:

WJ: “We need to save more tyres please, and we do want to let Oscar through.”

LN: “Well you should have boxed him first then, surely no?”

WJ: “Doesn’t matter.”

LN: “I mean, it does. To me maybe.”

Lap 57:

WJ: “And Lando, we still think you’re using the tyres too much at Turns 4 and 11 and the rears at exit Turn 6 and Turn 9. Oscar is 3.5 [behind] – we know you’ll do the right thing.”

Lap 58:

WJ: “And Lando, Hiroshi is stressed about the tyres.”

Lap 59:

WJ: “Turn 4, Turn 11 – it’s going to get boring.”

Lap 61:

WJ: “OK Lando, 10 laps to go – we think both cars are using their tyres too much. Just remember every single Sunday morning meeting we’ve had.”

LN: “Yeah, well tell him to catch up please.”

Lap 64:

WJ: “Lando, he can’t catch you up. You’ve proved your point and it really doesn’t matter.”

LN: “He’s on much quicker tyres. I mean, I would have tried to undercut anyway. If I did, I would have got more.”

WJ: “Mate, we did the stop sequence in this order for the good of the team.”

WJ and LN talk over each other for a sentence – unintelligible.

WJ: “I’m trying to protect you mate, I promise, I’m trying to protect you.”

Lap 66:

WJ: “And Lando, there are five laps to go. The way to win a championship is not by yourself, it’s with the team. You’re going to need Oscar, and you’re going to need the team.”

Lap 67:

OP: “The longer we leave this, the riskier it gets.”

TS: “Understood, Oscar, we’re managing it.”

WJ: “A potential Safety Car now would make this very awkward. Please do it. Now.”

Lap 68: Norris slows down the main straight to release Piastri into the lead

LN: “Yeah, you don’t need to say anything.”

Lap 70: Chequered flag, Piastri leads McLaren 1-2 home for maiden F1 win

TS: “Well done, Oscar, well done. Chequered flag. Well done, buddy. Really good.”

OP: “Yep, thank you, everyone. Thank you very much. Thanks for the coordination. Sorry, I made the swap a little bit more painful than it needed to be. But thank you, I appreciate that. Well done, maximum points, and a really good weekend. Ha. First F1 win, thank you very much, everyone, thanks.”

LN: “Well done, good 1-2, a good load of points. Congrats to the team. Well deserved.”

WJ: “As we said this morning mate, many more opportunities.”

TS: “And you are also Driver of the Day!”

OP: “Ah, a nice little bonus, thank you.”

Which is kinda nuts considering that given just a couple different decisions the WDC is MUCH closer.

*The Lando/Max collision cost
*Putting him on mediums instead of softs at Silverstone
*Letting him take the win yesterday.

Austria alone cost Lando 25 points, at worst 18 points had he not got the pass done, he'd have won Silverstone had he been on proper tires, that was a 10 point swing, and today was a 7 point swing.

So you're looking at the gap being 20-30 points instead of 76.

And Max would have gotten 18, so only a 7 point swing there.

Agree that Lando should be a lot closer, but his team prioritized Lando in 2nd to cover Ham and ensure a 1/2 finish when Oscar being in first should have been priority.

Sucks for Lando, but only right for him to give it back. Had he given it back earlier, they may have let them fight for it. So some of it is on Lando for trying to prove a point.

Every competitive person would be miserable in his spot. He probably thinks, and rightfully so, that if the team didn't mismanage the process so badly that he would have had a great chance to overtake Oscar on the track and win the race. That opportunity was taken from him.

And I think he did the right thing. He let Oscar pass. He congratulated Oscar and didn't throw his team under the bus during interviews. I think that is being the bigger person.
