Spot on. Since Max won his first championship, when there was a consistent battle between him and Hamilton for first, the quality of the cars between 2nd and the rest of the constructors has become much more uniform, separated by 10ths of a second in lap times and those battles for place and the driver's styles and history come into play and are super interesting!
But lnomm34 has probably watched a few recent episodes of 'Drive to Survive' on Netflix and came to this thread to flex his deep, intimate knowledge.

My two cents from watching the race

* I think you all are being unfair to Danny on this one, it was just racing to me, and even Max was defending the move as he was concerned about his left. Then again, he probably would have screwed up elswhere.

* Enjoyed the passing yesterday...

* Just like last week, it is exciting to know that Haas has people with strategy that gives them a chance even if they did not score yesterday.

* Very happy for Yuki..

* I am all for Sainz finishing 2nd in the WDC...Vamos Carlos

* Who is the next great American hope..Logan has to be on his last legs

* Congrats Sauber...you had 4 second pit stops instead of 20 or 30 seconds and you moved up places

* Alpine...with all their money...this is crazy

What coverage have you been watching this year. They don't show Max unless it's the start or the last lap. They've shown lots of the 3rd on down battles this year.

Agree, I bet if you break it down by amount of time on camera, Max gets less than 20%.

Which when you think about it is crazy compared to other sports. That the best driver on the grid and potentially best ever (lots TBD) gets so little live coverage.

I think F1 has done a great job this year with highlighting the 2-10 battles.

For fricking sure. They were like “oh btw he’s pitted” yesterday.

lol at Alonso keeping Piastri within DRS range to fend off Russell.

I got a feeling that the guy that was arguing with me before the season that Sainz is an overrated driver hasn't shown up lately.

Sainz killing it and Hamilton struggling makes me happy. I'd prefer for Sainz to get a shot at being the #1 on a team but it would be pretty cool to see how he could do in the Red Bull.

I was kind of surprised at the commentary putting no blame on Ric for the crash. I though the view from Strolls car was pretty telling that it was Danny's fault. I mean there was quit a bit of room on his left, he definitely wasn't pushed over. Not saying it was intentional, obviously it wasn't, but it doesn't mean you're not at fault if you just straight up don't see a guy and crash. I don't root against Ric, but it would be nice if the broadcast would give some criticism when it's needed. It's like it's in ESPN's contract that you can't say anything negative about him.

I think the biggest surprise of the season for me is still just how bad Alpine is. Not sure I've seen someone take this much of a step backwards, they are awful.

Again, Sainz to RB and when Max jumps with Newey at some point (maybe to AT or Max to Mercedes) then Sainz becomes the number 1.

Ya baw had Sainz finishing #2 in the WDC.

I agree, it would be great if he could be a #1, but Sainz and Max on the same team would equal total domination, even moreso than what is going on curently.

They were racy last season and at the top of the midfield. Ocon would've easily beaten Stroll for 10th place had he not DNF'd six times.

As much as I'd love for their to be some more parody at the top, seeing Sainz being part of the domination would make me happy

I do get the feeling though that Ferrari might have something hidden up their sleeve for next year. Could be dead wrong but I feel like they must have had something good to lure Lewis away. Although as it stands, Ferrari looks in better shape than Merc, I don't feel like it's THAT much better of a situation to cause him to make a jump. Unless Lewis doesn't see Merc getting any better anytime soon, which very well could be the case. Even on Drive to Survive I got that feeling from him.

Pretty wild. You know it's bad when you're worse than Sauber even with Sauber taking lunch breaks during pit stops.

Yeah, they definitely had something good to lure Lewis away: $446,000,000 in the twilight of his career

The commentary post-race about Checo fearing losing his seat to Sainz, causing him to step up his game was interesting.

I hadn't thought of it that way, but seems like a real possibility.

Two weeks to China. Need news, gossip, any content...

Oh, I just discovered F1 photographer Kym Illman's YouTube channel. His Suzuka videos are particularly interesting because he's so complimentary of the event and the fans. This is the first time I've seen Oscar Piastri's girlfriend Lily. Wow, what a cutie. She doesn't have that overly-tanned supermodel girlfriend look. She's in the first video.

Reigning F2 champion Theo Pourchaire has had a seat fitting for the McLaren IndyCar team for the #6 car, should David Malukas still be unavailable for the Long Beach race in a couple of weeks. Malukas had wrist/hand surgery Feb. 13 and apparently still isn't cleared to race. Callum Illot filled in for the first two events, but he has a WEC race the same weekend as Long Beach, so Pourchaire is the new backup.

racer.com/2024/04/08/f2-champion-pourchaire-on-standby-for-arrow-mclaren-at-long-beach/

Aside from his reserve role at Sauber, which will only get him an FP1 session, Pourchaire is racing Super Formula this year. They have only had one event so far, at Suzuka. I looked it up and Pourchaire came in last place among the finishers (there were 3 DNFs), and he finished behind a girl, Juju Noda. Juju is the daughter of ex-F1 driver Hideki Noda, and she was hyped when she was around ages 12-14 for driving F4 and F3 cars (she was too young to race, so she just tested). But she had really mediocre results in the W Series, which is really bad because even the three-time champion Jamie Chadwick is not really a competitive racer.

Iwasa finished as top rookie, having been the last to stop on lap 26, initially dropping to 10th before passing Makino around the outside at Spoon once his tyres were up to temperature.

Of the other newcomers, Iori Kimura was 12th for B-Max Racing behind a struggling Sho Tsuboi (TOM’S), Juju Noda (TGM) was 17th and Theo Pourchaire (Team Impul) was 18th on a miserable Super Formula debut for the reigning Formula 2 champion. That followed an off at Turn 7 (formerly Dunlop Curve*) for the French driver that required his front wing to be changed during his pitstop.

Kamui Kobayashi (KCMG) dropped out with a loose wheel late on.

*Dunlop curve is where Sargeant went off in FP1. Note that there is a mandatory pit stop for everyone, so he was only delayed however long it takes to replace the front wing.

Yeah, I'm really not a fan of these two-week gaps between the races early in the season.
